Texas City Denies Permit For Church’s Pride Festival

The Dallas Morning News reports:

Southlake city council denied a permit Tuesday night to a community Pride festival planned at an Episcopal church. Council members did not discuss the event or ask city staff or organizers any questions before unanimously rejecting a proposal to issue the permit for the Oct. 3 party. Organizers of Pride Kel-So told The Dallas Morning News on Wednesday they were disappointed and frustrated but would not give up.

“We believe God’s love is for everyone,” said the Rev. Alan Bentrup, who leads St. Martin-In-The-Field in Southlake, which planned to host the event. “We do this because of the gospel, not in spite of it. We believe our LGBT neighbors belong in this community and to God.”

Neither Mayor Shawn McCaskill (photo) nor any of the council members responded to emails. City spokeswoman Pilar Schank said she did not know why the council voted to deny the permit. St. Martin-in-the-Field first hosted Pride Kel-So last year, drawing some 1,600 people to the church’s 10 acres on the Southlake-Keller border.
