The insider’s gay guide on where to party, eat and stay in Washington DC

DC local Shaun Clark has his thumb on the city’s thriving nightlife. He grew up in the DMV (District, Maryland, Virginia area), and other than a brief stint in Georgia, he’s been a fixture in the DC scene.

Shaun is an avid sneaker collector with about 1000 pairs and knows where to shop and be seen. When you find him out twerking in the clubs, he’ll likely have on a different pair of shoes each time.

Shaun is also plugged into the city’s ever-expanding culinary scene. As he says, he loves food and knows where to get the best meals.

GayCities chatted with Shaun to get his quick take on where to party, where to stay, and what to eat when you’re in the nation’s capital. Get his insider take below.

GAYCITIES: When you go out with your friends, where do you bar hop, and in what order?

SHAUN CLARK: When my friends and I try to have a great night out, we’re probably hopping around U Street. Sometimes, we start with food, but usually at Thurst, where we can have a few drinks and enjoy some chill vibes, good people, and music. Sometimes, there’s no need to leave!

It’s common to leave there and go to Nellie’s, where we will usually end up dancing. A lot of people stopped going there, but it gets packed and people are always dancing. Sometimes I’ll pop out and go vibe at Dirty Goose, Uproar or Kiki.

Occasionally, we may start at Number Nine, head to Trade, and maybe migrate to Green Lantern. On Thursday, if you’re shirtless, you can get free drinks. They also have underwear parties.

There are so many places to choose from; it depends on your mood, who you’re with, and what you’re trying to do. There are spots that are also a bit more chill, like Little Gay Pub, Pitcher’s and Shakers.

Which one is your favorite?

I’d have to say Nellie’s, but only because of the people there. I love Green Lantern as well and Thurst has really been growing on me. Nellie’s, there’s always something going on there, and I know so many people who frequent that spot. It gets a lot of hate, but I’m a dancer and feel like the best dancers are there. What better than drinking, dancing, and looking good doing it?

What’s the best part about the nightlife in DC?

Honestly, for me, it’s the people. I’m always running into new folks and making friends with whoever. It doesn’t matter where I am or what I’m doing. There are so many people here from different places and backgrounds. DMV is so diverse and I’ve always appreciated that.

Which hotel do you suggest for out-of-town friends?

I like the DuPont Circle Hotel, the Kimpton George, and the Lyle. DuPont Circle, first because it’s in a great location, close enough to buzzing nightlife and an abundance of places to eat. You’re within walking distance from so many places like embassies, art museums, and more. The hotel features stylish scenes with a modern design, classic furniture, original art, and vibrant decor. 

Drag Queens… I’d have to say Sasha Adams Sanchez is my favorite in DC. Her looks and style are always on point. Very polished. She kills it! 

What is your favorite food and where do you get it in DC?

I will eat almost anywhere. I love food. From the top of my head, I’d say Bar Taco or Zaytinia. Bar Taco is always the first thing on my mind. I’m a sucker for tacos. Period! It’s such a dope atmosphere and a great place to either start or end your night. Honestly, who doesn’t love tacos?

What’s your favorite brand of underwear?

I collect underwear like I collect shoes. My favorites are Unico and Calvin’s. Lately, I’ve mostly been wearing Andrew Christian and Coyote.

What kind are you wearing now?

A Nike jock, currently.
