20 times queer people absolutely read straight culture for filth
Straight people can get totally out of hand—luckily these queer icons stepped in

Straight people, as we all know, can get well and truly out of hand. It’s not saying anything new to point out that in this timeline—the timeline of “boy moms,” trad wives, and chaotic gender reveal parties—the straights need Jesus, and thankfully the gays are here to help them see the light.
There’s a long, proud tradition of gay people getting straights together, but in the past 20 years, we’ve seen some primo examples of this in pop culture. From Carmen Carrera’s shush heard round the world to the eternal straight-people-in-gay-bars debate, here are just a few of the times gay people have had to come for straight peoples’ necks.
Carmen Carrera vs Katie Couric
Way back in 2014, at the very beginning of what Time Magazine called “The Transgender Tipping Point,” trans model and all-around icon Carmen Carrera came to Katie Couric’s ABC talk show Katie to discuss her quest to become Victoria’s Secret’s first-ever out trans model. And like most cis people at that period in time, Couric dismissed Carrera’s attempt to steer the conversation toward her career aspirations and instead asked rude questions about her body. But Carrera didn’t take the bait. She shushed Couric then and there, a move that was later applauded by fellow trans trailblazer Laverne Cox. From that point on, the bar was set, and we never looked back.
Laverne Cox vs Cis Actors
Laverne Cox has been showing up for the community for years, but in 2017, she told Michelangelo Signorile what really needed to be said in regard to cis actors taking trans roles.
Responding to shows and films like Transparent and Dallas Buyers Club, in which cis actors play trans women, and also citing trans filmmaker Jen Richards, Cox explained that: “Richards said that she believes that when cisgender men or non-transgender men play trans women it sends a message to people who don’t know trans folks that trans women are really men…all these actors who play trans women, when people who don’t know anything about trans folks and trans women see the very sexy Jared Leto and his beard accepting an Oscar for playing a trans woman, the message that it sends is that trans women are really men…and this leads to violence.”
It needed to be said, and Cox’s words did have an impact on the industry. The practice of casting cis people as trans characters definitely still exists, but now we’re seeing a new age of proud, thriving trans actors taking on their own roles with dignity and heart.
Tinashe vs JK Rowling

JK Rowling has been on her TERF nonsense for god knows how long at this point. It’s obnoxious and depressing, but the only good thing about this development is that we get to see queer people roast this woman consistently, and no one has done it better than pop icon Tinashe. The pansexual “Nasty” singer dragged Rowling in 2022 when Rowling came to Twitter to complain about how “you can’t say the word woman anymore!” With a simple tweet, Tinashe put Rowling in her place, and showed up for trans people in style.
The Gays vs DaBaby

In 2021, rapper DaBaby was able to effectively end his career with one, tone-deaf sentence shouted out to the crowd at Rolling Loud Miami. After the rapper implied that all gay people—as well as all people living with HIV—are somehow diseased and infected, fans completely lost interest in the “Shake Sumn” singer, especially after he doubled down on those comments months later. Things got so heated that eventually queer icon Dua Lipa had to remove DaBaby from her “Levitating” remix in 2022. Just goes to show the power of gay fans—don’t cross us, or we will cross you out.
Drag Race Fans vs Megan Trainor

Recently on The Bald and the Beautiful, queen Trixie Mattel called out Megan Trainor for having the audacity to wear a unicorn onesie on RuPaul’s Drag Race, and rightly so. Appearing in an outfit this casual in front of a group of drag queens was certainly a choice, and they gays wasted no time in dragging Trainor for it. The “All About That Bass” singer eventually ended up apologizing to the queens, but she learned her lesson. When you come to judge the queens, honey, you’d better show up in your finest attire!
Sherlock Fans vs. Moftiss
If you spent literally any time on Tumblr between 2011 and 2014, you’ll know the absolute chokehold the BBC series Sherlock had on the girls, gays, and theys. But as much as fans loved the queer-ish take on the classic Arthur Conan Doyle story, they also had many complaints with the shows creators, Mark Gatiss and Stephen Moffat (aka Moftiss), not letting their characters go all the way. It was one of the biggest examples of obvious queerbaiting during a moment when the “Bury Your Gays” trope still held strong. The Johnlock fandom still exists today, and they’re still waiting for bisexual Watson to reveal himself…with no luck.
SSA Mormons vs The World
In 2015, TLC gifted the gays with the extraordinary My Husband’s Not Gay. The title really says it all: in Salt Lake City, married Mormon men who experience “SSA” (same-sex attraction) battle their gay feelings for an hour, in front of…yes, their wives. It was mind-bending, ridiculous, and still comes up from time to time in the cultural conversation. To this day, you can find the gays roasting these delulus for all they’re worth, and it never stops being amazing.

Angelica Ross vs. Hollywood
In 2023, Angelica Ross decided she was done staying silent about her treatment in Hollywood. After tweeting out that she was ghosted by Ryan Murphy after pitching a series of American Horror Story featuring an all-Black woman cast, Ross continued to drag Hollywood for using up trans women of color and spitting them back out. “I’m leaving Hollywood in the sense of the system that is Hollywood,” the actress and tech entrepreneur told The Hollywood Reporter that year, “but I’m going to continue to create with those who want to create in a more liberated way.” The community stood behind her, and we’re still thankful to her for saying what needed to be said.
The Gays vs Chris Pratt
It wasn’t that long ago that Chris Pratt was seen as a sweet, handsome, relatively anodyne leading man of Parks and Recreation fame. The diva even showed up on an episode of “Billy on the Street” back in the day, and it was charming! But then, in 2023, Pratt’s Christianity started leaping out, and queer fans had to drag the man back into reality. And that was even before the man started praising RFK Jr. openly. Never let it be said that the gays aren’t the first responders on the scene when beloved figures start showing their true colors.
Bob the Drag Queen vs Homophobic Lady
Last, year, a TikToker with the handle @juicylucyy decided to upload a video talking about how “a lot of you men be gay” while waving an admonishing finger at the camera. Luckily, drag superstar and all-around legend Bob the Drag Queen showed up with a stitch that knocked that lady back into her homophobic boots…with the quickness.
“A lot of you women be homophobic,” Bob explained, before launching into a read of fair-weather straight women allies who want to come to the gay bar to have fun, but won’t fight for LGBTQ+ rights when they’re under threat.
The Gays vs Harrison Butker
As Drew Afualo once pointed out, you probably should be extra careful about saying dumb crap if your name has the word “butt” in it. If only Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker had considered this before ranting about how Pride Month is bad and how women need to get back into the kitchen. Alas, he did not, and the dragging he summarily received was the stuff of legend.

The Gays vs Candace Cameron Bure
Former Hallmark star and full-time homophobe Candace Cameron Bure made the switch to her own “faith-based” home movie network, Great American Family, some years ago, and she’s made no bones about the fact that she is not a fan of the gays. A few years ago she even went so far as to shame and blame Danny Pintauro on The View for being HIV positive, citing his “promiscuous lifestyle.” Girl…really?
Not only that, but Bure got into a bizarro fight with JoJo Siwa when Siwa had to name the “rudest celeb” she’s ever encountered. Bure’s commitment to homophobia has earned her several well-earned wig snatchings—because that’s what happens when you try to come for the true Queen of Christmas and Queen of the Gays!

Trans people vs Dave Chappelle
Since Dave Chappelle’s 2021 comedy special The Closer, the performer has increasingly made transphobia a part of his act. In fact, it feels like Chappelle’s beef with trans people is all he has to talk about at this point, along with fellow career transphobe Ricky Gervais. But trans people are well-versed in clapping back at idiots, and so are our allies. Icon and ally Margaret Cho has dragged Chappelle for his tone-deaf brand of “humor,” as has legend Michelle Buteau, but sadly, we have to keep collectively dragging this man for as long as it takes for him to find some new material.
The Gays vs Matt Gaetz
Disgraced former Attorney General Matt Gaetz is now showing feet on Cameo, but before that time, his evil machinations on the House Floor lead to many draggings from the gays, including a drag queen makeup tutorial that showed us just how he gets his eyebrows looking so crazy. His time in the spotlight may have been short, but you can bet the gays will never let him live his epic career fail down.

MTG vs. Remix Culture
OG evil Republican Barbie Marjorie Taylor Greene is never at a loss for words—usually incredibly stupid words. She loves to call queer people “groomers” and insist that “Jewish space lasers” are the cause of the unrest in this country. But one fateful day last year, Greene’s wig was thoroughly snatched by LGBTQ+ ally Rep. Jasmine Crockett who responded to a racist macroaggression from Greene but pointing out Greene’s “bleach blonde bad built butch body.” The next thing we knew, a Megan Thee Stallion-style remix was taking the internet by storm, and the gays were living for it.
Dan Savage vs. Rick Santorum
Remember Rick Santorum? If you do recall the former homophobic senator, it’s as a “frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex”, and that is entirely thanks to Dan Savage, who posted the “definition” to teach the conservative weirdo a lesson. During Santorum’s 2012 Presidential primary campaign, he tried his best to have this definition scrubbed from the internet, but Savage held strong, and magically, so did Google. It was one of the first cases of an anti-gay politician being laughed off the internet—and the campaign trail—by a meme, and it was glorious.
Straight People vs. Gay Bars
Do straight people ever belong in gay bars? We’ve been having this debate for what seems like centuries, and we’re no closer to the answer. Earlier this year, a straight woman posted a TikTok about feeling “ignored” in gay bars, and the community hit back in full force. A few years ago, a similar situation developed where straight women needed to be dragged about how entitled they sometimes act in gay safe spaces. The moral of the story? Show your local gay space respect, don’t make it all about you, and we can hang. If not, go to your own bar!

JD Vance vs CouchGate
Last year, before the nightmare cabinet took over, queer people were trying to take a page from Dan Savage’s book and pull a Santorum on guyliner influencer and then-VP hopeful JD Vance. But instead of redefining his name on the internet, one brilliant poster started a rumor about Vance’s saucy relationship with his couch—and it took off like wildfire. Things got so crazy that Vance had to actually come online and deny the couch-love allegations. But we’re still not convinced, and we never will be!
Ts Madison vs. Snoop Dogg
Earlier this year, beloved rapper Snoop Dogg randomly went homophobic on main, and everyone was shocked. Were we losing one of our best straight guys to the dark side? Apparently not, since Snoop ended up totally reversing course on his former statements (phew.) But like the true icon she is, Ts Madison did not take Snoop’s comments laying down. “Snoop, you have music videos with women dancing and kissing other women,” She told TMZ. “So why is displaying lesbian behaviour in your music video appropriate, and you are afraid to answer questions from your grandchildren?”
After Snoop backpedaled, Madison continued to ask the right questions. “Y’all dragged me for sticking up for our community always,” Madison said after being attack by Snoop’s fans for calling out his homophobia. “May I have an apology too?” We’re still waiting.

Renee Rapp vs Betty Who
One of the craziest discourse developments of this year happened after Aussie singer Betty Who dragged Renee Rapp’s name into a discussion about bisexuality. “When Renee Rapp says, ‘you’ll never catch me dating a man,’ it’s like ‘go off, queen!’” Who told the women of Made It Out podcast, “but I also hold space for her in 10 years if she goes, ‘oops, I met the love of my life, and it’s this man, I didn’t mean to.’”
Rapp, who is not bisexual, responded in perfect Renee Rapp fashion. “What the f*ck? What makes you think I’m gonna end up with a man?” Rapp told Cosmo. “Just literally focus on yourself. Don’t bring my big f*cking lesbian name into your mouth and into this drama.” Honestly, great advice for anyone thinking about dragging Rapp into some tomfoolery!
