The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is investigating a vehicle crash into a business early Saturday morning on Ybor City’s famous 7th Avenue that left 4 people dead and 11 others injured. Officers say the department’s Air Service unit was monitoring a vehicle driving recklessly at high speeds on I-275 around 12:40 a.m. Police say this was the same vehicle seen street racing earlier on Hillsborough Avenue near 22nd Street.
According to Tampa Police, the driver eventually lost control and crashed into Bradley’s on 7th. The vehicle hit more than dozen people outside on the popular gay bar’s patio. Officials say three people died at the scene. A fourth victim died at the hospital. Of the 11 injured victims, one is hospitalized in critical condition, while eight others are in stable condition. Two victims who received only minor injuries declined treatment on scene. All 15 of the victims are adults.
Tampa’s Spectrum affiliate reports:
Officials say the alleged driver was 22-year-old Silas Sampson. They say he was speeding before he hit multiple people at Bradley’s, a bar on 7th Avenue. Tampa police say that at around 12:45 a.m., Tampa Police Air Service saw a car speeding on I-275. Police believe that this was one of the vehicles they saw racing earlier.
When the driver got off the interstate, police attempted a pit maneuver and failed. When they got close to 7th Avenue, they disengaged due to the danger of doing a pit maneuver in the area. Tampa police say the alleged driver is in custody.
Florida Highway Patrol says the alleged driver is being charged with vehicular homicide and other felony charges are expected to follow. This remains as an active investigation.
