Homophobes attacked Arizona coach Becky Burke’s pregnancy announcement. She fired back.
Arizona women's basketball coach Becky Burke and her wife are being attacked for having a baby. Burke is firing back.

What was supposed to mark a beautiful announcement for Arizona head coach Becky Burke and her wife, Savannah, lives turned into a comment section full of hatred and homophobia.
Earlier this week, Savannah posted on Instagram that she’s pregnant with a girl due in December, the couple’s second child.
“She needed my help adding one more to the roster,” Savannah wrote.
There was certainly love and support shown for the Burke family, but the two women were also met with backlash simply because they’re a family with two moms. The comments section became so problematic, it has since been shut off.

Katy Faust, who is the founder of two anti-LGBTQ organizations and is aiming to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges 2015 with Make Kids Greater, posted on her X account denouncing Burke’s announcement.
Faust posted a rant about children hungering for a father, needing coaches, overstaying their welcome at friends houses to be near a father, and a bunch of other nonsense she claims she’s “cataloged” over the years.
The comments under Faust’s post were a mix of people backing her up, as well as supporters of Burke rushing to call out Faust’s prejudice.

Becky Burke fires back at homophobes opposing her family
Instead of folding and keeping quiet, Burke quickly put out a powerful statement on X.
“Let me be VERY clear,” she wrote. “Our announcement is about something much bigger than us. Representation matters. Visibility matters. As a public figure, I take great pride in representing my community and helping create that visibility. Our announcement is for people who have spent years wondering whether a future like this was possible for them. It’s about showing people in our community that families like ours exist, that they are real and that they deserve to be celebrated too.
“Maybe it would have been easier to take my post down. To be ashamed. But if you think that, you clearly don’t know me. I will not let hate win. I will stand up and speak for those in our community who can’t. At the end ofthe day, this isn’t about politics or proving a point. My focus will remain where it belongs: on my growing family, our incredible support system and continuing to live authentically.
Our happiness isn’t yours to approve.

She kept the comments open and received an immense amount of support.
CFBHome said, “Screw the haters!”
Erika Day said, “THAT’S MY COACH! Proud of you for being exactly who you were meant to be.”
Nickfromnorwood said, “It’s absolutely sickening that we live in the world where people think it’s okay to be homophobic/transphobic. Congrats on the new baby Coach Burke!”
The basketball community quickly backed Burke.
Arizona State associate head coach posted, “We may be rivals,, but she is my player and friend. She and Savannah are amazing parents!”
Former Wildcat and current Eastern Illinois assistant coach Mickayla Perdue wrote, “MY COACH! Continue to be you. Standing 10 toes.”
Just like Becky’s done since her days as head coach of Buffalo, she’s continuing to represent the LGBTQ+ community with all her heart. She’s showing the world that authenticity and happiness is what truly matters.
As Burke posted, “Our happiness isn’t yours to approve.”
