Photographer Steven Klein has enjoyed a collaborative relationship with Madonna that stretches back over two decades. He’s been responsible for some iconic images of the Material Girl. However, many of his fans expressed disappointment over a new video his official @stevenkleinstudio Instagram account shared.

The video tagged Madonna and the fashion house Dolce & Gabbana.

In the black-and-white clip, Madonna is on her knees, scrubbing the floor. A door opens behind her, and an army of 1950s-styled men and women rush into the room. Click to watch below.

The problem with the video is that it’s clearly AI-generated. It’s derived from a campaign Klein shot with Madonna for D&G in 2011. Below are just some of the hundreds of comments bemoaning the clip from such a renowned photographer and filmmaker.

Many people are critical of AI depriving creatives of work. The technology is also known to consume huge amounts of energy, and large amounts of water are required to keep the data centers that generate AI imagery sufficiently cool.

Madonna approves

It’s worth noting that not everyone criticized the clip. Madonna was among those who liked it. She also shared it to her Instagram stories. Others suggested AI is a legitimate tool for artists to explore.

It’s unlikely this Klein video is an official promo tool for Dolce & Gabbana. Madonna has appeared in a recent D&G campaign advert, but that was filmed by Mert Alas. The fashion has house shared one of the campaign’s videos yesterday.

Klein, 60, first met Madonna back in 2001, when she was starring in Up for Grabs in London. He went on to create a 44-page portfolio of Madonna for W magazine over the course of a single day in a Los Angeles studio.

Klein went on to photograph her repeatedly, including backdrop videos for the Re-Invention World Tour, the Confessions Tour, and further photoshoots for W and Vogue. Madonna also used his work for her Confessions on a Dance Floor and Hard Candy albums.

Madonna is currently working on Confessions on a Dancefloor 2 with producer and songwriter Stuart Price.
