Nonbinary Teen Nex Benedict’s Death Ruled A Suicide

ABC News reports:

Oklahoma 16-year-old Nex Benedict died by suicide, according to an autopsy report released Wednesday by the state’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Benedict, a member of the 2SLGBTQ community, died one day after getting into a physical fight with several other students at Owasso High School.

Benedict was nonbinary and went by they/them pronouns, according to Benedict’s family. 2SLGBTQ includes Two Spirit, an umbrella term used to describe a third gender in Native and Indigenous communities. Sue Benedict, their mother, is a registered member of the Choctaw Nation.

The Hill reports:

The 16-year-old died Feb. 8 after ingesting a lethal amount of antihistamines and antidepressants, according to a summary report obtained by The Hill. The full medical examiner’s report will be released on March 27, per Oklahoma law.

Benedict, a sophomore at Owasso High School in Owasso, collapsed at home on Feb. 8, one day after they were involved in what the school district and local authorities described as a physical altercation in the girls’ bathroom at school.

Benedict’s district, Owasso Public Schools, said in a Feb. 20 statement it followed all its protocols following the fight, including giving the students involved a health assessment by a registered nurse and informing parents of the option to file a police report.

KFOR, an NBC Oklahoma NBC affiliate, is reporting the medical examiner ruled the probable cause of death of Nex Benedict as being a suicide from overdose on Prozac and Benedryl.

Blood was noted on the mouth and nose.
