Osaka for Gay Couples: Our Adventure to Japan’s Most Dynamic City

Karl Krause

Konichiwa, Osaka! Precisely 10 years after our first trip to Japan, we are trading again Amsterdam’s canals for the unique culture of the island nation for three weeks. Our journey started with a comfy flight with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, connecting Amsterdam directly with Osaka. After 13 hours, we touched down in Japan’s third-biggest city. Osaka is known for being one of the most queer-welcoming Japanese cities. It still was a wonderful surprise to be welcomed at the airport by an Osaka Pride poster. But that’s not all! Delicious Japanese food, Universal Studios Japan, a castle that’ll make your jaw drop, and an LGBTQ+ scene as warm as a hug from your favorite drag queen. Are you a gay couple and ready to fall in love with Osaka? Let’s go!

Osaka & Japan – Our second gay couple adventure

Has it been 10 years already? Yes, it has. Our first big trip brought us to Japan in the late summer of 2013. From the moment we landed at the airport and were greeted by a lady who’s only job was to wave to us and show us the way to the escalator, we felt home. From there, our first Japanese adventure began. Osaka only played a minor role back then, being a traffic hub for our day trips to Osaka’s Universal Studios, Koyasan and Kyoto. This time, however, it was time to get to know Osaka, its culture, and its LGBTQ+ community.

Checking In: Osaka Excel Hotel Tokyu

First, we needed a home base for our days in Osaka. A place where we could recharge and reconnect after an eventful day of exploring. The stylish Osaka Excel Hotel Tokyu, was our hotel of choice. Nestled high above the city on the 30th to 40th floors of the Midtown Tower. The hotel is conveniently located within 10 minutes walking distance to Hommachi and Shinsaibashi Station. This way it is a breeze to travel around the city on Osaka’s excellent public transportation system. We enjoyed the sleek design, plush beds (perfect for cuddling), and those panoramic views of Osaka’s skyline from anywhere on the hotel floors.

Superior King-bed Room on the 15th floor

Our king-bed room was spacious, especially for Japanese standards. It had plenty of space for our luggage and the first souvenirs of our trip. Robes, slippers, a bathtub, coffee and tea amenities, and a healthy international and Japanese breakfast were provided for a comfortable city trip. The laundry room (just a few hundred Yen for a machine), included a dryer and iron space. The luggage service (storage and shipping services) completed the offered hotel services.

Breakfast Tip: Check in at the breakfast reception at least 30 minutes before the official buffet closing time. You will not be seated much later in the spacious breakfast room with a view of Osaka.

In 2024 Japan became part of the Booking.com Travel Proud Program. This gives hotels the opportunity to receive inclusive hospitality training to help them gain better understanding of the specific challenges of LGBTQ+ travellers making sure they feel welcome. The Osaka Excel hotel Tokyu is one of the first hotels in Osaka with the Travel Proud certificate.

The hotel bar on the reception floor was a great spot to unwind with a cocktail, watch the city lights underneath, and take a kiss selfie.

A Rainbow History: Osaka’s LGBTQ+ Evolution

Before we dive headfirst into our gay couple Osaka adventure, let’s take a quick detour into the city’s vibrant LGBTQ+ history. Japan might not be as openly progressive as some other Western countries (same-sex marriage is still a work in progress). But Osaka has historically been a bit of a rebel for queer acceptance, if you will. For Japanese standards, it’s a city that embraces diversity and celebrates those who dare to be different.

The city’s history of embracing diverse identities dates back to the Edo period (1603-1868). It were the flamboyant geisha and kabuki traditions, where gender fluidity was celebrated on stage. These traditions challenged societal norms and somewhat paved the way for a more inclusive and accepting society. And while progress has been gradual, Osaka has led the charge for LGBTQ+ equality in Japan. In 2019, it became the second city in Japan to introduce a partnership certificate system for same-sex couples. A small but significant step towards full recognition.

Today, Osaka boasts a thriving LGBTQ+ scene. Whether you’re hitting the gay bars in Doyamacho or simply strolling hand-in-hand through the park, you’ll feel safe, and welcome. Not everyone will understand or agree with your lifestyle. But especially as a western tourist, you will never notice. So, Osaka feels to us like a city where you can be yourself without fearing noticeable judgment.

Osaka Unbound: Exploring the City’s Treasures

Osaka begs to be explored, and we were more than happy to oblige, strolling around hand in hand. From bustling shopping streets to serene gardens and ancient temples, Osaka has something for everyone, and we were eager to experience it all.

Dotonbori Delights: Shopping and Ferris Wheels

Our first stop was the iconic Dotonbori district. A dazzling explosion of neon lights, touristy crowds, and enough street food to make our taste buds sing. We wandered along the Dotonbori River, browsing quirky shops and tried out some seriously delicious Japanese snacks. Don’t miss the chance to sample the local specialty, okonomiyaki (a savory pancake that’s like a party in your mouth). And for the non vegetarians takoyaki (octopus balls – trust Karl, they’re a must-try).

Of course, no trip to Dotonbori is complete without a spin on the iconic Ebisu Tower Ferris Wheel in front of the Don Quijote store. We hopped aboard this first ever vertical ferris wheel and waved to all the people way down. At the top, the view was incredible, stretching out as far as the eye could see.

And speaking of Don Quijote, this “discount” store is a wonderland of weird and wonderful finds. It’s a maze of aisles, where people are stocking up on quirky souvenirs, skin care products, Japanese snacks, and everything in between. Just be prepared for sensory overload. This place is a whirlwind of sights and sounds. It made Daan a little uncomfortable so keep track if you are still really enjoying yourself while looking at 50 different kinds of Japanese candy.

Our IG Reel about our Osaka highlights:

Lion’s Lair: Namba Yasaka Shrine

No trip to Japan is complete without a visit to a shrine. The first one on our bucket list was the Namba Yasaka Shrine in Osaka, a truly unique experience. This shrine, dedicated to Susanoo-no-Mikoto, the Shinto god of the sea, features a massive Lion head (a stunning 12 meters tall!) as its centerpiece.

Of course, we couldn’t resist snapping a few selfies and videos with the lion, hoping to capture some of its legendary good luck. The shrine itself is a beautiful calm oasis in the heart of the city. It is also one of the most visited tourist activities so unless you are willing to get up real early, you won’t be the only one.

Namba Parks: A Green Oasis in the City

It wasn’t time for dinner yet, and we were searching for a less busy spot to calm down and just feel the city of Osaka. Listening to the city sounds, watching birds between the trees and planning our next days, we escaped the urban jungle finding ourselves in Namba Parks.

The unique green oasis built atop Namba Station is a tranquil space and a breath of fresh air. With terraced gardens, benches to rest, shops and even a rooftop farm. It was the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and chill for a moment between the plants and trees.

Osaka Castle: A Majestic Icon

As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in a kaleidoscope of colors, we made our way to Osaka Castle. A majestic landmark that has stood tall since the 16th century. We wandered through Nishinomaru Garden while joggers passed by and the city started to slow down. We soaked in the peaceful atmosphere and admired the castle’s imposing architecture. The castle, with its gleaming white walls and intricate green roof tiles, is a sight to behold. A testament to the ingenuity and artistry of its builders.

And while the castle of Osaka is magnificent to see during the day, it is even more enchanting at night. Illuminated in a golden glow that seems to transport you back in time. We imagined samurai warriors patrolling the ramparts, their swords glinting in the moonlight. And courtly ladies strolling through the gardens, their kimonos rustling in the breeze. We shared a few stolen kisses as we gazed at the twinkling cityscape.

Kabuki Magic: A Night at the Theatre

To cap off our day of exploration, we were invited to a traditional Kabuki performance at the Sumiyoshi Taisha shrine by the Shochikuza Theatre. We were mesmerized by the elaborate costumes, dramatic makeup, and stylized movements of the performers. After seeing our first 3-hour Kabuki performance in Kyoto ten years ago, it was again an unforgettable experience showcasing Japanese passion, artistry, and ancient traditions.

Even if you don’t understand Japanese, the visual spectacle is a feast for the senses and a must-see for any visitor to Osaka. The intricate make up, the beautiful costumes, and the dramatic music all combine to create an unforgettable performance.

Universal Studios Osaka: A Day of Movie Magic

When we visited Universal Studios Japan in Osaka ten years ago, they just opened The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It was our first time we ever stepped into Hogsmeade. Back then, we were so impressed with the Hogwarts castle view and loved all the cute details in the shop windows and the amazing merchandise.

Over the last years, Universal Studios Japan has become known for their special events and entertainment. For the 10-year anniversary of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, they introduced Meeting the Magical Creatures of Hogsmeade. An instant classic! We were very lucky to be able to meet and even pet a Niffler, Pigmy puff and a baby dragon!

Next to Harry Potter, the park offers some other great IP’s. There is the Jurassic Park area with the best and most intense rollercoaster of the park called The Flying Dinosaur (you prob only want to do this one ones…). If you like thrills, don’t forget to also ride the USJ exclusives Hollywood Dream and Space Fantasy coasters.

You can also ride the last existing JAWS ride, which has been demolished to make space for Potter in other Universal parks. This campy boat ride is extra fun in Japanese while everyone around you is screaming from excitement for the robot shark. Now also open at Epic Universe in Orlando, Universal Studios Japan is home to the very first Super Nintendo World with the one-of-a-kind Donkey Kong coaster: Mine Cart madness.

If you are planning to visit Universal Studios Japan, our friend TDRexplorer created a park guide with all tips, and tricks for the best times to visit (and when not to), what to eat, how to experience all the best attractions and how to buy your park tickets and express pass. With the help of his guide, we found the two best places in the park to eat when you are traveling with a vegetarian.

The lost World Restaurant has a vegan menu and serves some delicious vegan side dishes. And the Three Broomsticks at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter serves a full vegan menu and even vegan butter beer!

It was Halloween when we visited Osaka so Universal Studios japan had a ton of extra scary fun happening. Our highlight was definitely meeting Pikachu during the “POKÉMON CHARGE-UP! HALLOWEEN GREETING”.

Osaka Pride: A Celebration of Love – not only for Gay Couples

We talked about Osaka’s leading role in achieving equality for the LGBTQ+ community in Japan. Firstly, one of the reasons why we as a gay couple planned our Japan trip so late last year was to experience Osaka Pride. Together with our travel friends from IGLTA and numerous locals from Osaka, we attended this memorable event – our first Pride in an Asian country. Equipped with rainbow flags, placards and posters, we made our way around Osaka’s Ogimachi Park as part of the Pride parade.

A sea of colors during the Pride Parade in Osaka

The Pride parade was a heart warming spectacle with music, dancing, smiling faces and waving rainbow flags. The parade was very well organized so we kind of had to stay with our group and walked with everyone else on one side of the road while cars were driving by quite fast. Anywhere else this would be seen as dangerous but here in Osaka things like this are possible. It was an incredible experience to be surrounded by so many Japanese people who walked open and proud with their rainbow shirts and flags.

The energy of the parade was infectious, with people coming out of shops and taking pictures and waving back at us. A very good feeling since that is what we are here for to do. Showing that queer people are here and that we can celebrate unique identities. It was a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come and how much further we still need to go in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights all around the world.

Travel Tip: The parade typically takes place in late October, so be sure to check the official website for the latest dates and route information.

Pride in the Park: Rainbow Festival in Osaka

The parade ended where we have started, in the Ogimachi Park for the Park festival. Musicians and dance performers entertained the crowd, food stalls tempted us with delicious treats, and various LGBTQ+ organizations and businesses proudly shared their stories and resources. We danced, sang, and connected with fellow members of the community, feeling the true spirit of Pride.

The festival was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the LGBTQ+ community in Osaka and connect with local organizations and businesses. We chatted with friendly volunteers, browsed colorful stalls, and enjoyed the lively atmosphere. It was a heartwarming experience that left us feeling inspired and energized for our upcoming Japan trip as a gay couple.

Gay Osaka After Dark: Nightlife Adventures

Of course, no trip to Osaka is complete without experiencing its gay nightlife. We hit up some of the hottest spots in Doyamacho, and let’s just say, we weren’t disappointed. The energy in this district is palpable, with neon lights luring you into a world of fun and freedom.

Queer Bar Frenz Frenzy: Dancing the Night Away

First up was FrenZ FrenZY, a small but popular queer bar that pulsates with energy and color. We danced the night away to the latest pop hits, mingling with locals and fellow travelers alike, our bodies moving to the rhythm while singing along karaoke-style. It’s definitely a must-visit for anyone looking to experience Osaka’s queer nightlife.

Eagle Osaka: Leather and Levi’s

Another place gay couples should pay a visit in Osaka is the gay bar Eagle Osaka. There are multiple Eagle gay bars in major cities around the world, such as Eagle Amsterdam, Eagle New York and even Eagle Tokyo. They all have one thing in common, their clientele usually like some fetish (gear) like leather, providing, let’s call it, a mature kind of vibe. This bar is a great place to meet locals and experience a different side of Osaka’s gay scene, a place where you can let your guard down and be yourself.

Grand Slam: Karaoke Kings

Of course, we couldn’t resist a bit of karaoke while in Japan. A great place to go to for LGBTQ+ travelers is called Grand Slam, a karaoke bar with a vast selection of international and locals songs. We belted out our favorite tunes, laughing and having a blast, our voices echoing through the room, our inhibitions left at the door. We quickly made friends so karaoke is also for gay couples a quintessential Japanese experience in Osaka, so don’t miss out on the fun!

Of course, there are many more places LGBTQ+ travelers should visit. Maybe you get even lucky to meet a local who would bring you in one of the private small one-room-gay-bars in Japan. Usually, foreigners do not know about these places, as those are meant for locals to meet after work. However, sometimes you might get an invitation to experience them yourself. And although we got lucky and spent an evening in such a unique Japanese bar wearing nothing but a Fundoshi, we would rather not share details so publicly to protect the local’s safe spaces. If you want to know more, send us a massage. Thanks for understanding! ????

But we’ve got a great up-to-date overview of LGBTQ+ bars in Osaka here.
