Netflix Drops Trailer for Cannes-Winning Gay Epic ‘La Bola Negra’

Netflix has released the first teaser for La Bola Negra, and the acclaimed queer epic looks ready to break our hearts in the best way.

Known in English as The Black Ball, the Spanish-language drama connects the lives of three gay men living in 1932, 1937 and 2017. Though separated by generations, their stories become intertwined through desire, pain and love.

The teaser offers an emotional first look at the film’s different time periods, its ambitious scale and the relationships at the heart of the story. Audiences can expect a sweeping mix of queer romance, history and family legacy, all brought together by an impressive international cast. What Is ‘La Bola Negra’ About?

Milo Quifes, Spanish musician Guitarricadelafuente and Carlos González play the three central characters. González leads the film’s modern-day storyline, while the other chapters take viewers back to the years surrounding the Spanish Civil War.

According to Netflix, the movie explores memory, love and queer identity through a “moving, classically staged epic.”

In other words, prepare for longing, beautiful period drama and plenty of emotional connections unfolding across time. The Queer History Behind the Film

La Bola Negra takes its title from an unfinished work by celebrated Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca, who was assassinated in 1936.

The film also draws inspiration from co-writer Alberto Conejero’s play La Piedra Oscura, known in English as The Dark Stone. Alberto Cortés portrays Lorca in the movie.

Directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, collectively known as Los Javis, developed the screenplay with Conejero.

The movie arrives with plenty of excitement. La Bola Negra made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where Calvo and Ambrossi won the best director prize.

Netflix later secured U.S. distribution rights after a competitive bidding war, making the film one of the festival’s most sought-after titles.

The cast includes Guitarricadelafuente as Sebastián, González as Alberto, Quifes as Carlos, Miguel Bernardeau as Rafael Rodríguez Rapún and queer comedian and filmmaker Julio Torres as Juan Pablo.

Lola Dueñas, Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close round out the ensemble.

La Bola Negra opens in Spain on Sept. 25 before beginning its U.S. theatrical run Oct. 16. It arrives on Netflix in the United States and Canada on Dec. 2.

The 47-day gap between its theatrical and streaming releases is Netflix’s longest theatrical window to date, breaking the previous record held by Marriage Story.

Between its generation-spanning gay love stories, prestigious festival reception and gorgeous period setting, La Bola Negra is shaping up to be one of the year’s biggest queer films.
