Over the weekend, the iconic music festival descended on the titular desert oasis that is Coachella Valley, showcasing performances by Icelandic pixie Bjork, Damon Alborn’s conceptual cartoon band Gorillaz, British cutie-pie Calvin Harris, and many more. Reflecting the diversity of this musical lineup, attendees traveled from a variety of cities, including major metropolises such as New York and Los Angeles, as well as international locales like Peru and Venezuela. These colorful backgrounds resulted in a slew of unique styles, incorporating mesh, body paint, hair dye, and even a dress comprised entirely of beer can tabs.
This flair for fashion added to the adventurous spirit of the weekend. Kelvin “Posdnos” Mercer summed it up best with a call-and-response shout-out during Gorillaz’s performance of Feel Good Inc.
“I!,” the Dela Soul rapper proclaimed, to which the crowd immediately repeated, “Will never! Let anyone! Tell me! What to think! And I! Will never! Let anyone! Tell me! What to feel!”
In honor of Coachella’s embrace of radical self-expression, we’ve rounded up some of the fiercest fashion on display at week one of Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. We won’t tell you how to feel, but we hope it makes you feel good.
