NewJersey.com reports:

Tensions in the Westwood Regional School District came to a boil Thursday, at a chaotic board meeting where LGBTQ+ students and opposing activists traded catcalls and accusations and local police were called in to keep the peace.

Hundreds of people packed the high school auditorium during the meeting, which came after the K-12 district’s interim superintendent abruptly resigned amid a controversy over an LGBTQ pride sign that was removed from the middle school lawn.

Over the course of the nearly four-hour meeting, a scuffle broke out in the high school lobby and a group of American-flag-waving protesters confronted a larger group in the audience who wore red in support of the LGBTQ community.

News 12 New Jersey reports:

As News 12 New Jersey previously reported, Westwood High School students pushed a petition back in May to have Pride signs on school grounds. Those signs were removed because they violated a flag policy. Some teachers in Westwood were in support of the signs being reinstated.

Those in support of the ban say school officials should be focusing more on test scores. The heated meeting took place after the interim superintendent of the Westwood Regional School District abruptly resigned. Kenneth Rota stepped down Monday, saying it was for personal reasons.

New York City’s Pix 11 reports:

Multiple verbal disputes broke out, prompting Washington Township Police to respond and escort out select individuals.

The district recently adopted a new flag policy, only allowing the United States and State of New Jersey flags to fly outside school buildings.

Hundreds of parents, students and teachers showed up Thursday night, donning Pride colors and waving Pride flags, protesting the district’s decision. Only a few dozen of those in attendance supported a ban on Pride signs and flags.
