Rory McIlroy wasn’t having it. The PGA golfer — one of the best golfers in the world — was subjected to horrific gay slurs and other homophobic comments throughout the Ryder Cup.

The ridiculous barrage of anti-gay insults that came down on McIlroy during the Ryder Cup tournament are well-reported.

Now comes video that shows McIlroy not only defending himself, but taking charge of the situation and acknowledging the power of gay slurs.

Whatever fan screamed the gay slur “f***ot” at McIlroy absolutely deserved to be escorted off the premises of Bethpage Black. In fact, that person should be identified and never be allowed at a PGA Tour event ever again.

Forget about it being a gold tournament. This kind of behavior is unacceptable at any sporting event. If anyone calls another fan, a player, a coach or anyone else a gay slur, they should be ejected from the stadium or arena and banned.

This is easy.

Of course, finding the person who yelled the slur is sometimes hard. Many cowards who yell these slurs cower when authorities come by asking questions. They’re big men when they don’t think authorities are listening. But when McIlroy and others point them out, they get suddenly quiet.

In the end, McIlroy and the Europeans won the Ryder Cup after the Americans made a fierce attempt to win on the final day.

Rory McIlroy and the other players from Europe sent a message to Americans, as well as the President. It was a childish act by McIlroy and the Europeans. Maybe surprising to some, the President responded with grace.

It all seemed in good fun and sportsmanship — unlike the gay slurs hurled at McIlroy. It’s nice to see even the President getting in on the smiles of the Ryder Cup.

Europe has won the last two Ryder Cups.

Rory McIlroy is currently ranked No. 2 in the world. He’s one of the few pro golfers who has won all four Major Tournaments: US Open, PGA Championship, The Masters and British Open.
