Snoop Dogg just did a total 180 on gay views & now everyone’s confused

Back in August, rapper Snoop Dogg—previously a friend of the gays—had a MAGA brainfart and decided to complain about gay representation after seeing the Disney film Lightyear with his grandson.

The 2022 film—which features a Black lesbian couple and a gay kiss that had homophobes raging—apparently upset Snoop when it caused his grandson to ask him some questions about same-sex families.

How about we take this to the next level?

“My grandson, in the middle of the movie is like, ‘Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!’” Snoop told the “It’s Giving” podcast two months ago.

“It f*cked me up. I’m like, scared to go to the movies. Y’all throwing me in the middle of sh*t that I don’t have an answer for… It threw me for a loop. I’m like, ‘What part of the movie was this?’ These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”

Obviously this about face was confusing, to say the least. Queer people remembered Snoop as a refreshingly non-homophobic presence in the early oughts, when it was considered fine for mainstream rappers to be openly anti-LGBTQ+. And we all remember his show-stopping appearance in that episode of “The L Word.” So, what changed??

We don’t know, but whatever changed has apparently… changed back????

Yesterday, on Spirit Day, news hit that the rapper had partnered with GLAAD to promote tolerance and awareness of LGBTQ+ families. He also released a new song on his kid’s show “Doggyland” called “Love is Love,” calling on his friend, gay The Voice host Jeremy Beloate, to help tell a story about inclusive families and queer acceptance.

To which everyone is saying… wait, what??

We appreciate the gesture, Snoop, but why did you come for us in the first place? On Instagram, trans legend Ts Madison summed up the public feeling best, stating:

“Wait……………Yall dragged me for sticking up for our community always. May i have an apology Too?”

Madison is referring to her comments following Snoop’s weird moment of anti-gay brainfreeze. “Snoop, you have music videos with women dancing and kissing other women,” She said on TMZ. “So why is displaying lesbian behaviour in your music video appropriate, and you are afraid to answer questions from your grandchildren?”

Snoop fans predictably dragged Madison for making this and other salient points in her rebuke, and now, she’s asking the right questions. Celebrities in this climate are able to play both sides against the middle while never actually coming out and saying which side they’re on (looking at you, Taylor Swift!).

But some of us don’t have a choice but to show up for our community 100% of the time. So before praising Snoop for coming back around, we still have to wonder what led him to say those homophobic things in the first place.

“Everybody recognizes the ???? spending power when they lose it,” one commenter wisely wrote under Madison’s post. Another poster stated: “The apology bettuh be as loud as the disrespect was.”

Notably, we haven’t received an apology from Snoop yet—just this branded content announcement.

“Is snoop just doing anything for money now?” Someone else asked. “It seems like he’s bouncing back and forth and I think he just wants to get paid.”

It sure does seem that way!

Then again, some feel that any step toward making things right with the community is a positive one, especially in this climate.

Others, like Madison, feel that it’s simply too little, too late.

Obviously this is pretty confusing, especially knowing what we know about Snoop’s support of That Man in the White House. Can someone who performed at Sauron’s inauguration truly give a crap about us? Seems unlikely. As Madison says, if you’re going to stand for our rights, you have to stand for them all the time—not just when it’s politically or financially convenient.
