Fight Club meets But I’m a Cheerleader in the first trailer for Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri’s lesbian comedy Bottoms.
Directed by Emma Seligman, who also shared writing duties with Sennott, the highly-anticipated film follows two queer teenagers who create a fight club to “impress and hook up with cheerleaders”.
“Their bizarre plan works. The fight club gains traction and soon the most popular girls in school are beating each other up in the name of self-defense,” reads the official synopsis.
“But PJ (Sennott) and Josie (Edebiri) find themselves in over their heads and in need of a way out before their plan is exposed.”
Bottoms also stars Havana Rose Liu (No Exit) as Isabel, Kaia Gerber (American Horror Stories) as Brittany and Nicholas Galitzine (Red, White & Royal Blue) as Jeff.
Additional cast members include Dagmara Domińcyzk (Succession), Marshawn Lynch (Westworld), Ruby Cruz (Mare of Easttown), Miles Fowler (The Resident) and Punkie Johnson (Saturday Night Live).
Earlier this year, Bottoms premiered at the 2023 SXSW film festival, where it received widespread critical acclaim for Sennott and Edebiri’s leading performances, its satirical elements and the queer representation.
Ahead of its limited theatrical release in August, Sennott and Seligman opened up to Entertainment Weekly about the project and what inspired their creative process.
“We didn’t rewatch Superbad or American Pie because I think we didn’t want to be influenced by them,” Seligman said. “But definitely, we felt like queer women hadn’t gotten there due from a teen sex comedy.”
Sennott added that they referred to films like Scott Pilgrim, Jawbreakers and Jennifer’s Body to create Bottom’s teen comedy/action film dynamic.
“We said we want the girls to fight each other, we want there to be a bomb, we want them to be trying to win over the cheerleaders,” she explained.
“We had references in our mind… all these different movies. But we also wanted to make sure we weren’t [just] doing one that it as a mashup of genres. It’s a campy high school movie, but it’s also an action movie.”
Bottoms will have a limited theatrical release in the United States on 25 August, before expanding on 1 September. Watch the first trailer here or below.
