Yahoo News reports:

The BBC has sparked a backlash after censoring a pro-trans message which appeared on a Strictly Come Dancing star’s T-shirt. On Saturday evening, viewers of the flagship BBC entertainment show saw House of the Dragon actor Bethany Antonia dance an “American Smooth” with her professional partner Nancy Xu.

Ahead of the performance, the BBC showed a montage of the pair rehearsing the dance – at points in which Antonia was wearing a white T-shirt with the slogan “Protect the Dolls”. However, the BBC edited the T-shirt’s slogan, to make it appear as if it was plain white.

“Protect the Dolls” is a pro-trans message that uses language from the 1980s New York ballroom scene. The slogan first appeared on a T-shirt by fashion designer Conner Ives in early 2025. It has since been worn by a host of celebrities including Madonna and Pedro Pascal, and raised hundreds of thousands for the charity Trans Lifeline. The New York Times described the design as a “sensation”.

‘Protect the Dolls’ is a term meaning ‘take care of trans ppl’. Its origin is due to the campaign of persecution & violence aimed at this vulnerable part of the Gay community. LGBTQ ppl nationally, & internationally, have been flagging that UK state TV is actively transphobic, for years. More proof!

You might claim that the BBC is avoiding promoting a cause, or charity [these t-shirts are often part of fundraising], or promoting a ‘political’ perspective. The problem is that supporting trans ppl is an official UK govt charity, just as much as the BBC’s own charity*.
