DaveyWavey’s iconic videos are almost old enough to vote: Remembering the ’00s queer internet pioneer

Millennials don’t need any help being reminded of how old we’re getting—our creaking joints and 9 PM bedtime keep us firmly aware of that reality! But in case someone out there needed it, here’s the proof: The Tab just did a much-needed retrospective of OG YouTuber DaveyWavey and it’s really making us feel every bit of our advanced years. Especially after realizing that some of the early gay creator’s most iconic videos have almost reached legal voting age.
If you by some chance missed out on the whole DaveyWavey phenomenon, here’s a refresher: In the dark days of 2007, an intrepid reporter showed up on what used to be our FYP (the YouTube homepage, lol) with a very interesting scoop titled “I Caught My Hot Neighbor Masturbating! (with sound).” A generation was instantly hooked, and we never looked back. The man who nearly attended a conservative Christian university found his destiny in a very different sphere, and boy are we grateful!

DaveyWavey’s content progressed from its salacious beginnings toward a slightly more formulaic, if still wonderful, place. Videos with titles like “Jock Straps vs Man Thongs!” and “Straight Guys React to Gay P*rn!” instantly drew us in, in between Davey’s more editorialized offerings (“Mom, Stop Watching My YouTube Videos!”) and collaborations with every known gay on the early ’00s internet.
DaveyWavey had the gays in a chokehold, and because of the time period, he did not have a lot of competition. But even in a post-Glee, marriage equality landscape, he managed to hold his own (sometimes literally.) He described his videos as “mostly p*nis jokes,” and honestly, there’s always been a market for that.
“I have no f*cking idea what I do,” DaveyWavey confessed to fellow queer YouTuber Matt Baume in these very pages way back in 2014. With video titles like “Gay Condom Party!” and “Coming Out to Siri!” he really didn’t need to know what he did: he just needed to keep doing it. And do it he did.
So you’ll be thrilled to know that DaveyWavey is still very much doing his thing online, in a slightly different format. While the OG creator has always kept things on the spicy side, things have gotten much more, shall we say, liberated on his page since those early pre-Obama days. Davey has taken his auteur skills to the platform, Himeros.TV, a spicy space he co-founded.
Ripped and shredded as ever (and sporting a newly-bleached coiff), he often makes cameos in these short spicy films. It’s way less d*ck jokes and far more d*ck action. Which is absolutely fine by everyone!
Last year, he even wrote his own scripted series that he nicknames “The Gay White Lotus.” As if the regular White Lotus wasn’t gay enough!
It’s lovely to know that Davey is still living the dream out there. This man seduced straight twinks, interviewed lesbians, and came out to Siri so that the current culture could run, and we are forever grateful for his service.
