Dean Cain says he “loved” playing gay in ‘Broken Hearts Club’ despite proudly voting against LGBTQ+ rights
Dean Cain voted for the convicted felon president three times.

Dean Cain is so proud of his past history playing gay characters that he voted against LGBTQ+ rights in the last three presidential elections.
While famous for playing the Man of Steel in the ’90s TV series Lois & Clark: The Adventures of Superman, these days the 58-year-old is best known for being a member of the MAGA cult and spewing his right-wing opinions anywhere that will have him on.
Earlier this month, Cain, who admits to voting for the convicted felon president three times, sounded off on the new Superman film by calling it “woke” before actually having seen it.

The Broken Hearts Club
Before he fell down the MAGA rabbit hole, Cain actually had a promising career and followed up his Superman stint starring in the now-classic gay rom-com drama The Broken Hearts Club.
The 2000 film, which was Greg Berlanti’s directorial debut, followed a close-knit group of 20something gay men in West Hollywood as they navigated friendship, romance and living authentically. Cain played Cole, a struggling actor with a habit of breaking hearts.
In one scene, Cain gets with a newbie twink played by Andrew Keegan and the two makeout during one of the group’s softball games.
While doing press for the film back in the day, Cain said kissing Keegan “was no big deal. It was not a very uncomfortable thing.”

While you may think that MAGA star would now want all physical evidence of that queer performance relegated to the confines of Alligator Alcatraz, in a new interview Cain couldn’t be prouder of his work playing an out and proud sex-positive gay man.
“I played gay in two films, and I loved it,” Cain told Variety. “And when I did Greg’s film [Broken Hearts Club], people were like, ‘We’re concerned because people might think you’re gay in real life.’ And I said, ‘Well, then I’ve done my job.’”
But before Cain gets labeled the next RINO, in the same interview he couldn’t stop himself from fawning all over Daddy Cheeto.
“I love President Tr*mp. I’ve been friends with him forever,” he said of the 79-year-old convicted felon, before devolving into alternative facts, “Tr*mp is actually one of the most empathetic, wonderful, generous people you’ll ever meet.”
Based on that alone, it’s clear Cain’s words can’t be trusted.
Cain’s complicated LGBTQ+ history
The D-list actor has a complicated history with the gay community, simultaneously stating his pro-LGBTQ+ stance while acting to the contrary.
In 2013, he came out in support of same-sex marriage telling the Huffington Post, “if anybody wants to get married, go ahead. I have a lot of gay friends … I can’t understand why it’s an issue. For me, it’s a non-issue.”
Ok, but “it doesn’t affect me so I don’t care” isn’t exactly winning him any allyship awards.
Five years later, Cain received backlash for agreeing to speak at the anti-LGBTQ+ group Family Research Council’s Value Voters summit. When called out by GLAAD, Cain tried to have his gay cake and eat it too by claiming he was just going to promote his latest right-wing film while reiterating his support for LGBTQ+ rights
“I’m not there to do anything other than discuss the film, GOSNELL. And I’m pro-choice. That will probably take-up the bulk of the time,” he tweeted. “I’m not there to preach or to lecture—I hope they ask about my support for gay rights. I haven’t studied their record.”
The old “I don’t know her” excuse. Thanks, Mariah!

Cain’s alleged gay rights support and superhero legacy collided in 2021 after he had a hissy fit over DC Comics having the latest Superman come out as bisexual.
“I say they’re bandwagoning,” he complained. “I don’t think it’s bold or brave or some crazy new direction. If they had done this 20 years ago, perhaps that would be bold or brave.”
Yes, it would have been great if it happened sooner, but it didn’t. And Cain’s cis straight male privilege is trying to gaslight the importance of visibility and representation. Which is right in line with his dear leader and the whole dystopian MAGA movement.
Speaking of which, his stance on trans rights is straight out of Project 2025.
In short, no one is shocked that Cain is no Superman to the gay community, but we’re sooooooo happy he loved playing gay characters in the past.
On that note, we’re going to try and not let Cain’s MAGA makeover ruin our enjoyment of The Broken Hearts Club, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this fall.
The Broken Hearts Club–which also stars Billy Porter, Timothy Olyphant, Zach Braff, Justin Theroux and the late, great John Mahoney–is available to rent on Amazon Video and AppleTV+.
