Will Klein of the Los Angeles Dodgers was the highly unlikely hero in their 6-5, 18-inning Game 3 World Series win over the Toronto Blue Jays. He pitched four scoreless innings to get the win, which is amazing for a guy who was in the minor leagues until June and had never before pitched more than two innings in a major league game.

“I never dreamed that anything like this would happen,” he said after the game, where the Dodgers took a 2-1 Series lead. “I don’t think I could have dreamt a dream that good. I just had that thought in my mind that we weren’t going to lose that game.”

A fan of Rapinoe

After the game, like a lot of fans, I was wondering who the heck is Will Klein. Happily, I found a gay angle, since Klein is a big fan of LGBTQ soccer legend Megan Rapinoe. Witness his “Rapinoe-Kaepernick 2020” T-shirt he wore for a family Christmas photo in 2019.

Rapinoe and former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick became lightning rods when they took a knee during the national anthem against injustice. By wearing that shirt, we get a sense of where Klein stands on the issue of social justice.

A fan of cats

As a bonus, he and his wife, Carson, love cats and dress them up in Christmas sweaters. I am not sure the cats are that wild about the idea, but it does look cute.

A fan of ‘The Office’

For Halloween one year, he and Carson dressed up as the Schrutes from “The Office.” Of course, one of their cats made an appearance.

He has an epic beard

There is no truth to the rumor that Klein was clean-shaven prior to the start of the second-longest game in World Series history.

What’s always been cool about sports, which still provides the best unscripted drama, is how an unknown like Klein can rocket to legendary status with a fan base in a matter of moments. Prior to the 15th inning, very few people has ever heard of Klein. Four innings later, he was being mobbed by his teammates and celebrated as a World Series hero.
