Florida City Rallies To Save Rainbow Crosswalk [VIDEO]

Tampa’s ABC affiliate reports:

Some of St. Petersburg’s most visible street art — including murals celebrating Black history and LGBTQ pride — could soon be erased under a new directive from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

Ahead of a city council meeting on the issue, dozens of demonstrators gathered outside City Hall, calling on council members to fight back against the state order to remove “non-standard surface markings,” including several murals. FDOT says the move is about traffic safety, but critics argue there’s no data to support that claim.

In a statement, St. Petersburg Mayor Kenneth Welch said the city is working with FDOT to determine what needs to be removed and whether exceptions are possible. “Regardless of outcome,” the statement read, “we will continue to explore ways to reflect our culture and values as a city.”
