From Boots to the French Quarter: Jack Cameron Kay lands starring role in queer New Orleans romance
From filmmaker Daniel Talbott, 'Until The Time We Die' promises to be a fantastic showcase for the out rising star.

Acclaimed gays-in-the-military dramedy Boots may have been discharged by Netflix way too soon, but at least its talented cast has been keeping busy off-duty.
Series lead Miles Heizer just dropped his first album, fellow recruit Kieron Moore received raves for his daring turn in queer indie Blue Film, and Max Parker is suiting up for a major role in Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of popular ancient mythology video game series God Of War.
And now it’s Jack Cameron Kay’s turn!
The out star made a big impression in Boots‘ final three episodes, playing a transfer recruit whose complicated bond with Heizer’s character help brings the hero out of his shell. We were hoping to see more of him if the series got a second season, but thankfully the actor’s hit the ground running, lining up plenty of exciting projects.

For one, he’s got a supporting role in Jordan Firstman’s queer comedy Club Kid, which was a total crowd-pleaser at the Cannes Film Festival and is set to hit theaters before the end of the year, courtesy of A24. He’s also just appeared in the stage adaptation of Brokeback Mountain, which made its American premiere at Chicago’s Shakespeare Theater after an acclaimed run on the West End with Lucas Hedges & Mike Faist.
And perhaps most exciting of all, Kay’s just been announced as the star of upcoming indie film Until The Time We Die, described as a “queer love story” set in New Orleans.
Per Deadline, the film is centered on a young man named Taylor who’s lived a quiet, solitary life in the home he was raised ever since his parents passed, only really leaving to venture far outside the city where he cares for his troubled older brother Cody.

The following is an excerpt from the new book “Small Town Rage: Fighting Back in the Deep South” by Dr. David W. Hylan, out now.
But when Cody makes a decision that irrevocably changes the brothers’ dynamic, Taylor finds himself aimless and now completely alone. So, as the film’s official synopsis puts it, “he emerges from the smallness of his existence and ventures into the chaos and swirl of the French Quarter and greater New Orleans, whose eclectic inhabitants, lost souls, and fellow travelers will either drown him or help him toward some new shore of possibility.”
Until The Time We Die comes from writer-director Daniel Talbott, the celebrated filmmaker whose work includes indie drama Midday Black Midnight Blue, documentary short Welcome To The Tool Shed, and co-curating LA’s beloved Black Cat Cinema queer film series.
As Talbott shares with Deadline, the story comes from a deeply personal place: “It was born from my first deep love with a guy, the first boy I kissed, taking his life in a small cabin in the woods,” he says. “I wanted to write a queer love story about a kid who cascades through the hellscape this world can be for queer kids, and who makes it in the end. Not just makes it, but soars.”
It sure sounds like a juicy role that should showcase Kay’s range, allowing him to explore family drama, self-discovery, and hopefully some love and levity through Taylor’s adventures in the French Quarter, a section of NOLA with some deep queer history.
“When I first read this script, I was immediately struck by how vivid and alive the characters are, as well as by the richness of the world they inhabit,” the actor shares. “It’s an honor to be involved, and I look forward to starting work on this.”
There’s no word yet on other cast additions or when production on Until The Time We Die is set to begin, but considering Kay just wrapped up with Brokeback Mountain at the end of June, we imagine he might be available to start filming soon.
In other words, stay tuned for more details on Until The Time We Die, and in the meantime, treat yourself to some gorgeous Instagram shots of Jack Cameron Kay, because you deserve it!
