Josh Sanders continues to live his dream as a TV news reporter, currently at the CBS affiliate in Philadelphia.

It was an assignment he got last week to cover the LA fires that brought him back to Los Angeles. The former athlete, who came out publicly as gay and shared his struggles as a gay Christian over a decade ago, was an Angeleno for several years, before his pursuit of TV news brought him to Phoenix.

Now with CBS Philadelphia, he was sent 2,500 miles into the fires of Los Angeles to provide additional coverage of the disaster that has captured the attention of the nation and the world.

As the local KCAL News struggled very quickly to keep up with the Los Angeles fires — which became the top news story in the world for its destruction — Sanders got the call. He seems to have not hesitated to grab his crew and head west.

The heartbreaking Los Angeles fires are affecting thousands, including many gay athletes and their families
Everyone in the Los Angeles area is somehow affected by the fires, with thousands of people losing their homes.

Sanders brought many reports over the last week to CBS viewers, giving Americans, as well as people around the world, a glimpse of one of the worst disasters California has ever witnessed.

Seeing the destruction of various parts of the city he once called “home,” and which continues to hold a place in his heart, clearly moved Sanders emotionally.

“My heart is heavy as I continue to process what my friends and chosen family in Los Angeles continue to overcome,” Sanders wrote on Instagram.

“As a member of the CBS News and CBS Philadelphia family I am beyond proud of the KCAL News team’s coverage.

“They are part of the communities they serve.

“Angelenos are the very definition of resilience. During my time reporting on the Palisades and Eaton fires, I saw firsthand how the heartbeats of the city I still consider home pulsed as one, unyielding in the face of devastation. Even with uncertain days ahead, I have no doubt the City of Angels will rebuild, stronger and more united than ever.

“I love you, LA—your spirit is unbreakable.”

Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the tragic LA fires. We know the destruction has been unprecedented, and we hope everyone will support the victims however possible.
