This is part of Outsports’ series of “Dear Giants” letters written by San Francisco Giants fans and sent to the team after their mishandling of this season’s Pride Night, with Bible verses written on Pride caps by three players intending to send an anti-gay message during Pride Night.
Sean Higgins is a gay man living in San Francisco who has embraced the SF Giants representing his beloved city. He attends only a couple games a year, but his fandom means a lot to him.
It sure doesn’t feel that way to Sean anymore.
In sharing his “Dear Giants” letter to the team with Outsports, he also said the team’s now-two-month response to the actions of three anti-gay Christian players on June 12 has made the team’s Pride Night seem simply “performative,” with the team’s silence itself taking a position.
To consider returning his fandom to the Giants, Sean said he’d need to see an increase in commitment to the LGBTQ community.

Dear Giants,
I’ve been a lifelong Giants fan, but your silence over the Bible verse controversy on Pride Night has made me question whether I can continue supporting this organization.
If your commitment to LGBTQ+ fans disappears the moment it’s tested, then Pride Night is nothing more than performative. Your silence doesn’t avoid taking a side. It takes one.
I’m done accepting rainbow logos and themed jerseys in place of actual leadership. As a gay fan, I deserve better from a team I’ve supported for years. Address this publicly, or don’t pretend the Giants stand for inclusion.
