Gypsy Rose Blanchard has revealed that she ‘experimented’ with her sexuality in prison.
The Munchhausen awareness activist and social media personality opened up about her identity in the second episode of Lifetime series Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up, which chronicles her journey “as a free woman, including reconnecting with family and finally living with her husband Ryan Anderson for the first time”.
“A big part of womanhood is learning to become comfortable with their sexuality, and for years I wasn’t,” she shared in the episode.
“For a long time, I questioned my own sexuality because [when] I was a teenager or a pre-teen, I felt like I was attracted to girls, and I got to experiment with that in prison.”
She added: “I think I’ve kissed more girls than I have guys.”
In 2015, Blanchard was sentenced to ten years in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder for the death of her mother, Dee Blanchard, who abused her daughter by fabricating illness and disabilities as a result of Munchausen syndrome by proxy.
Dee was stabbed to death by her daughter’s boyfriend at the time, Nicholas Godejohn, who had planned it with Blanchard. Godejohn was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
The case received worldwide media attention, with Blanchard appearing on shows such as Dr Phil, Good Morning America, The View, This Morning and – for some reason – The Kardashians.
HBO also released the 2017 documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest, while the story was dramatised in the Hulu series The Act, starring Patricia Arquette as Dee and Joey King as Gypsy Rose.
