Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman has opened up about how the show helped jump-start their healing journey.

On 3 August, Netflix released the beloved series’ highly anticipated second season.

In the new batch of episodes, Charlie (Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor) “navigate their new relationship” and the pressures of coming out to friends and family.

Tara (Corinna Brown) and Darcy (Kizzy Edgell) endure some “unforeseen challenges,” which stem from the latter’s mysterious family life. Tao (William Gao) and Elle (Yasmin Finney) cautiously work out if they can be more than just friends.

Isaac (Tobie Donovan) also goes on his own journey of self-discovery by exploring where he fits in the LGBTQ+ spectrum.

Lastly, the second entry follows the heartwarming friend group as they travel to Paris on a school trip and plan their end-of-year prom.

Since its release, Heartstopper season two has received universal acclaim from fans and critics, with many lauding the eight episodes for its diverse set of storylines and the cast’s incredible chemistry.

It has also earned a certified 97% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In a recent interview with The Irish Times, Oseman reflected on the new Heartstopper season and its positive impact on LGBTQ+ viewers.

“In Heartstopper, I try to explore realistic contemporary issues with a hopeful and optimistic lens. I think that is what people like about Heartstopper more than anything,” they explained.

“It feels like it could be real, but with the comfort and knowledge that everything is going to be okay in the end… I think that’s particularly comforting for the queer community.

“We want to see our struggles represented accurately in the media, but we also often want media that makes us feel hopeful, comforted and happy…”

Towards the end of their interview, Oseman revealed that Heartstopper has helped them realise that they have healing to do, regarding their past.

“Working on Heartstopper constantly brings me back to my own teenage years, which were not exactly full of queer joy,” the young talent explained.

“Seeing how Heartstopper has helped so many queer teens is so special and magical but it has also helped me see that I’ve got some healing of my own to do.”

Fortunately, Oseman will be treating fans to another emotional and heartwarming season of Heartstopper, which was initially announced back in 2022.

In an additional interview with Metro, the 28-year-old revealed that season three will look deeper into Nick and Charlie’s relationship and the latter’s past history with mental health.

“I think it’s pretty obvious from the way we leave the season that is going to be a big element of season three,” they said.
