Who is Lewis Gibson?
Inspired by the British competition series Dancing on Ice, Lewis Gibson began skating in 2006. Initially competing as a singles skater, his early career accomplishments included silver medals in the 2013 British Championships and the 2014-2015 season’s Hamar Trophy in Norway.
In 2016, Gibson transitioned to pair skating, debuting with his soon-to-be longtime partner, Lilah Fear, at the Lake Placid Ice Dance International. Although only earning 11th place in this initial outing, the duo would fare better later in the season, nabbing silver at the Santa Claus Cup in Hungary and winning the British National title.
Over the next decade, Gibson/Fear garnered the British National title eight times, including this season.

Record 45 out LGBTQ athletes to compete in 2026 Milan Winter Olympics
Team LGBTQ will be the biggest ever for a Winter Olympics, and the number of out athletes competing for gold in Milan continues to grow.
“A lot of the routines of recent times have been very slow and lyrical,” Gibson explained, “but we wanted to do something fun and something that would stand out to help us make a name for ourselves.”
Their gambit proved successful, and the duo earned the nickname “The Disco Brits.” This would be the first of many times they would harness gay-coded music into their routines. Debuting at the Winter Olympics in Beijing 2022, they performed to The Lion King soundtrack (notably written by gay pop royalty Elton John), and the following year they free danced to Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.”
On a personal level, 2022 was significant for Gibson as he began speaking openly about being gay just before the Olympics.
“I’ve seen so many people who have gone before me and just living their truth and being so authentic when they perform in their sport and really just wanting that for myself as well,” said Gibson during an interview with Outsports‘ Cyd Zeigler.
“I can’t live never sharing who I am and sharing who I love. And I’m really glad, as time has progressed, I’m doing things like this and embracing this side of me more.”

This month Gibson and Fear return to the Olympics, serving as two of the eight figure skaters representing Great Britain this year. Gibson will also be part of Team LGBTQ, the growing list of out athletes competing at the Winter Olympics.
“We’re building toward being at our very best on Olympic ice, and that also means aiming for the podium,” Gibson said to Outsports. “This season has really shown that it could be possible for us.”
They have a shot at a medal after finishing 10th overall at the 2022 Winter Olympics. They won gold at one Grand Prix this season, and silver at another, landing with bronze at the Grand Prix Final.
The Disco Brits are certainly capable of bringing home an Olympic medal for Team GB and LGBTQ.
