Of course, no one should be surprised that an Olympic medalist might be gay. At the Paris Olympics last summer, Outsports knew of 199 publicly out LGBTQ athletes competing, with nearly two dozen men.

As we’ve said many times, that list doesn’t include plenty of athletes out in their own private lives. Nuguse, we now know, was one of those people.

The Instagram post from Yared Nuguse got plenty of wonderful responses.

Fellow Oympic runner for Team USA Nikki Hiltz had a one-word response: “Obsessed.”

Another out gay distance runner in the U.S., Matt Llano: “Love this – you will inspire so many!!!”

Olympic bobsledder Chris Kinney simply said, “Yay.”

Who is Yared Nuguse?

Nuguse ran for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in college. In 2022, he broke the indoor record for the 3000-meter race that had stood for almost two decades. Later that year he finished ninth in the NCAA Championships in that same event.

Two years later he went on to win the national championship in the 3000-meter. Yet it was at the Paris Olympics later that summer that he would win an Olympic bronze medal and a place in history.

He’s now training for a big upcoming season with some incredible wins in the last year, as one of his coaches discussed.

Nuguse grew up in Louisville, Ky., the fourth of six children to two parents from Ethiopia.

Now he’s building his own family, presumably starting with his boyfriend, Julian (who is, we have no doubt, now getting a flood of follow requests on his private Instagram account). We’re wishing them lots of love and happiness together.
