The Desert Sun reports:
The Palm Desert City Council rejected a proposal from one of its members to halt the city’s recognition of local LGBTQ Pride celebrations. The vote came amid overwhelming opposition to the change from residents and organizations from across the Coachella Valley.
The proposal from Palm Desert Mayor Pro Tem Joe Pradetto, which he first raised at a Dec. 11 meeting, was to rescind a city resolution adopted in 2024 and discontinue the city’s practice of hanging banners for Greater Palm Springs Pride each November.
The council chambers at Palm Desert City Hall were filled during the special meeting, with some attendees having to stand in a nearby annex due to a lack of standing room. Nearly all who spoke urged the council to keep its current banner hung during Palm Springs Pride in November.
NBC Palm Springs reports:
Proponents, though few in number, echoed Pradetto’s argument for government neutrality, insisting that only the American and state flags should be flown. Pradetto himself spoke for 15 minutes, ultimately doubling down on his proposal to remove all banners, arguing it was a stand for “liberty, tolerance, and equality.”
However, the Council quickly moved to reject his position. A motion was made and passed 4-1 to take no action on the existing resolutions, effectively keeping the Pride policy in place and ensuring the proclamation and banner policy remain unchanged. The decision was hailed by many as a victory for the community.”
Palm Desert, a popular shopping destination with a population of 53,000, is about 15 miles east of Palm Springs. Skip around the video below and you’ll see many eldergays in the packed chamber and some great speeches to the council.
