New England Patriots players are rallying around a Gay Bowl championship team… that took its name from a legendary film from the 1970s.

“The Warriors” was a 1979 film that told the story of a band of rogues working their way through New York City as other groups followed and attacked them.

This idea of many teams attacking another team obviously took hold in New England, as it did in New York when the original great gay flag football dynasty took shape.

How Bill Belichick inspired two gay flag football teams to Gay Bowl success
Bill Belichick’s excellence, and the lessons he shared, extended even to success at the Gay Bowl. This is the story.

The New York Warriors were eventually featured in a documentary film — “Flag Football” — that chronicled their ascension to the championship game of the Gay Bowl tournament.

Though, as I remember pretty well, it didn’t work out for the Warriors.

The New York Warriors were the first LGBTQ flag football team to win three championships at the Gay Bowl, which is the world championship tournament for gay flag football. The San Diego Bolts have since surpassed the Warriors’ record of three consecutive titles.

I was one of the architects of the Warriors championship teams, along with Wade Davis and Alon Hacohen (one of our straight players, who was our quarterback).

Together we won 18 straight games at the Gay Bowl and three titles, beating Chicago, San Diego and Salt Lake City in each of the final games.

Davis is still one of the best players to ever play in the Gay Bowl, a former NFL prospect who played in NFL Europe and was in the training camps for various NFL teams.

The Gay Bowl is still going strong, with teams from over two dozen American cities embracing gay flag football and sending at least one team to compete for various championships.
