Paul Mescal Issues First Statement Supporting Trans Rights: ‘It Feels More and More Pressing That We Make Our Voices Heard’
Paul Mescal is standing with the transgender community.
Normal People and The History of Sound star Paul Mescal has shared his first public statement in support of the trans community ahead of this year’s London Trans+ Pride march, calling on people to speak up during what he described as an increasingly urgent moment.
“I’m incredibly proud to stand in support of my trans friends and the wider trans community,” Mescal said.
“Given the political climate at the moment it feels more and more pressing that we make our voices heard. This is a moment for respect, safety and recognition. Trans rights are human rights.”
Mescal’s message was released alongside a collection of statements from public figures supporting London Trans+ Pride, which returns to central London on July 25 under the theme “Our Future, Our Fight.”
Founded in 2019, London Trans+ Pride was created in response to rising anti-trans rhetoric and discrimination, as well as concerns that mainstream Pride celebrations were becoming increasingly commercialized and disconnected from their roots as protests. Organizers describe the event as a community-led movement dedicated to visibility, liberation, and resistance against political and social efforts to roll back trans rights.
According to the organization, the event exists to create a space where trans and gender-diverse people can be “unashamed and unafraid” while celebrating their identities in the face of ongoing hostility and discrimination. The group also emphasizes solidarity with other marginalized communities and maintains that Pride should remain rooted in activism and collective action.
The organization’s core message is simple: “Trans+ Rights are Human Rights.”
Mescal is one of several high-profile supporters backing this year’s demonstration. Other public figures who contributed messages of solidarity include Mel B, Jessie Ware, Jameela Jamil, Jeremy Corbyn, Munroe Bergdorf, Jake Shears, Rina Sawayama, Harris Dickinson, Will Young, Paloma Faith, Suzy Izzard, and Honey Dijon.
Mescal’s support is likely to resonate with many LGBTQ+ fans who have followed his recent work. The actor received critical acclaim for his performance opposite Andrew Scott in All of Us Strangers and most recently starred in the queer romance The History of Sound alongside Josh O’Connor.
As for what’s next, Mescal will portray Paul McCartney in director Sam Mendes’ ambitious four-part Beatles film series, which is expected to arrive in 2028.
