Russell Tovey and Tom Blyth are going undercover for a new queer police drama.
The new film titled Plainclothes is set in the 90s and follows “a working-class undercover officer” who “is tasked with entrapping and apprehending gay men, only to find himself drawn to one of his targets.”
The new independent film, written and directed by Carmen Emmi, is produced by Arthur Landon, Colby Cote and Eric Podwall.
Landon and Cote told Variety that the film “is a heartfelt story that deals with internal conflict, family, and the complexities of sexual identity in the face of societal and personal expectations. We are excited to bring his first screenplay to life with this incredible cast.”
Other details around additional cast members are yet to be announced.
The pair said Emmi, who is making his directorial debut with Plainclothes, is “one of those unique talents who truly deserves a platform for his creative ingenuity.”
Tovey is currently appearing as John O’Shea who is Capote’s lover and manager in Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.
Previously, the actor starred as Guy in BBC’s critically-acclaimed comedy Juice. The series follows Jamma (Mwaan Rizwan) as he navigates the millennial mundanities of finding the balance between his creative agency job, budding romantic relationship with Guy and the complexities of fighting for attention in a busy family environment.
For his performance in Years and Years, Tovey was nominated in 2020 for a Critics’ Choice Award as Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television.
Blyth rose in notoriety when he appeared as Coriolanus Snow in The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Prior to this role he played the titular character in the MGM+ series Billy the Kid.
He has shared a screenshot of the script of Plainclothes on his Instagram Story, alongside the caption “beyond honored to be bringing Carmen Emmi’s beautiful vision to the screen.”
The film will be shot in Syracuse in New York.
