A gay slur “somehow” recently made its way to the lips of yet another professional athlete, and now of course he’s been told by the publicists to tell the world he’s “remorseful.”

Given his suspension, he very well may be.

Riak Andrew of Aussie Rules Football was caught saying an anti-gay slur. The player for the Sydney Swans now faces a multi-game suspension.

And good for the AFL.

We at Outsports have said over and over and over again that the only way to get through to athletes is to suspend them for sustained periods after they share mean, homophobic language.

In yet another AFL homophobia incident, West Coast Eagles’ Jack Graham has been suspended for four games for using a gay slur.

Many pro athletes can sustain fines of thousands of dollars. That doesn’t have an effect on most of them.

You tell them, “Sorry, you can play for the next month”… that has a real impact on their own personal legacy, as well as their ability to contribute to their team and help their teammates win.

Suspensions. Suspensions. Suspensions. Every single incident of a college or pro athlete using a gay slur should be met with his removal from games. That is the way to get through to them.

Interestingly, Andrew’s Instagram feed is full of hot shirtless men hanging out together.

It’s fascinating that a professional athlete who seems to love yelling anti-gay slurs might also love to share images of himself with other shirtless men, their bare bodies touching one another.

He hasn’t been shy about these photos on Instagram. In one photo with many shirtless guys touching, Andrew shared the photo with simply a smiley face.

And again he loved touching other shirtless guys…

And more shirtless guys…

Whatever the reason Riak Andrew either consciously or sub-consciously used a gay slur, he’ll have to live with that and his suspension. As well as his clear interest in sharing photos of hot shirtless men.
