Riverdale showrunner reveals why Archie and Jughead never ‘hooked up’

Riverdale could have given us more than we bargained for, but the showrunner has revealed that an Archie and Jughead canoodle was not meant to be.

After 137 episodes spanning across seven seasons, the mystery drama based on the Archie comic book reached its conclusion earlier this year. Fans were transported with a 67 year time jump to reveal a four-way polymarist relationship between the show’s four main leads.

In true Riverdale style, the final episode was an emotional rollercoaster and everyone ends up dying (of course). The audience learns of the four-way relationship through an 86 year-old Betty (Michelle Scarabelli) who is reminded of her quad relationship with Archie (KJ Apa), Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and Veronica (Camila Mendes) for the entirety of Senior Year.

Despite the surprising revelation, the show never shows Archie and Jughead hooking up, although all other combinations of the awesome foursome’s relationships are seen in flashbacks.

Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa revealed to TVLine that “we did not shoot KJ and Cole hooking up.” This has put an end to swirling rumours from fans left questioning whether in fact the scene of the pair had ever been shot and just not made it to final edit.

“We hadn’t even really laid even the barest seed of there being a romance between Archie and Jughead. Not even a whisper of that… We hadn’t really explored or even hinted at that, where we had with all the other couplings,” Aguirre-Sacasa said.

He added that the writers did consider throwing in a kiss between the two, but ultimately scrapped it. “It was just like, ‘Is this a cheat if we do this?’” he said.

“When I look back, wouldn’t it have been great to just pop to KJ and Cole kissing? Absolutely! I think everyone would’ve been up for it. I think Cole and KJ would’ve completely been up for it. Who doesn’t want to see that?”

Alas, we can all rest now that we know an Archie and Jughead make-out sesh didn’t actually happen and is stuck on an editor’s computer somewhere. However, the next big question is: was a foursome filmed? So many questions!
