Sabrina Carpenter has cemented her gay icon title.
Throughout 2024, the talented singer-songwriter has dominated the pop culture sphere with her chart-topping singles, ‘Espresso’ and ‘Please Please Please.’
On 23 August, Carpenter continued her music takeover when she dropped her sixth studio album, Short n’ Sweet.
Since its release, the record has received universal acclaim from fans and critics, with many praising the body of work for its exploration of genres, Carpenter’s vocals and its clever lyrical content.
However, one song off Short n’ Sweet that has captured the attention of LGBTQIA+ listeners is ‘Slim Pickins’ – with many claiming that it samples the unforgettable Grindr notification sound.
The music moment allegedly takes place during the outro (2:17 mark), while Carpenter sings: “And since the Lord forgot my gay awakenin.'”
One listener on X, formerly known as Twitter, wrote: “DID I JUST HEAR THE GRINDR NOTIFICATION IN THE BACKGROUND OF SLIM PICKINS??? AT THE END??? GIRL.”
Another fan echoed similar sentiments, writing: “Did anyone notice Sabrina used the Grindr notification when she sang about her gay awakening in slim pickins?? like what??”
A third person added: “Sabrina is deadass the funniest pop girl. I’m obsessed with her MWAH.”
Even Grindr joined in on the fun, tweeting: “grindr4sabrina.”

As of this writing, Carpenter has yet to confirm whether it’s a sample or an interpolation using the song’s banjo guitar.
Fortunately, the Short n’ Sweet era has been filled with other confirmed queer moments.
On the same day as the album’s release, the 25-year-old talent dropped the sapphic music video for her third single, ‘Taste’.
The Dave Meyers-directed visual for the infectious pop-rock anthem follows the ‘Espresso‘ singer and Scream star Jenna Ortega as they shoot, stab and torture one another for the affection of a man.
Towards the end of the video, Jenna’s character plants a kiss on her boyfriend, only for him to be revealed as Sabrina. It concludes with the duo accidentally murdering the boyfriend, attending his funeral and sharing a cheeky smile at the pandemonium they’ve caused. Very gay!
Inspired by Death Becomes Her, it features direct references to Madeline Ashton (Meryl Streep) and Helen Sharp’s (Goldie Hawn) iconic rivalry, with Sabrina and Jenna respectively sporting a hole in the chest and a bent neck.
The video’s sapphic romance hasn’t come out of nowhere, either, with the following lyrics giving – in the words of one fan – “queer energy”: “I heard you’re back together, and if that’s true, you’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you.”
Short ‘n‘ Sweet is out now – watch the music video for ‘Taste‘ here or below.
