Spain Tops Annual Ranking Of LGBTQ Rights In Europe

USA Today reports:

After a decade leading Europe in LGBTQIA+ equality, Malta was officially knocked down a spot by the continent’s new No. 1 place holder, Spain. The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association’s European chapter on May 12 published its 18th “Rainbow Map,” a comprehensive look at equality for diverse sexual identities, expressions and orientations across the continent.

The report comes at a time when LGBTQIA+ protections are increasingly under threat across the U.S., with states on track to introduce a record number of bills targeting queer and gender nonconforming communities this year, according to data from the ACLU.

“Spain’s No’1 ranking is more than a measure of policy progress,” ILGA-Europe said in its news release. “At a moment when authoritarian forces are pressing in on European democracy from east and west, and when LGBTI rights are being heavily weaponized as a political tool, Spain’s forward momentum is a good example of what democratic leadership can look like.”
