In the heart of the North Georgia Mountains, Blue Moon Campground is giving visitors the LGBTQ+-friendly summer-camp fantasy they’ve dreamt of since childhood — minus the mandatory keychain-making classes.

The private, queer-only membership-based campground — for adults ages 21 and up — is wrapping up its inaugural season after spending the summer celebrating community and connecting with nature across 220 acres of sprawling woodland and meadows.

In a small market of queer outdoor recreational destinations, Blue Moon Campground stands out for its mix of both rustic charm and resort-esque glamping options, hosting visitors in tents, RV sites, and custom cabins.

Whether you’re looking to hike in the dirt or soak up some green views from a comfy couch, the Southeast spot is ready to provide your unique brand of serenity, and according to co-founder, Andrew Kibble, it’s “more than just a campground.”

“Once in a blue moon, you find a place that feels truly magical, and that is why we called it Blue Moon Campground,” he said in a statement.

“We wanted to build a space where LGBTQ+ people could relax, recharge, and connect — whether that’s around a campfire, by the pool, or on a trail.”

Of course, the heart and soul of the campground is its clubhouse and sparkling pool, where guests can lounge, splash, and convene with friends new and old while surrounded by stunning greenery.

In its first ten weekends, Blue Moon Campground hosted more than 1,000 guests for themed celebrations like Bears in the Woods, Wet & Wild, Okotoberfest, and Halloween.

And thanks to its out-of-the-gate success, Kibble and his team are already planning an expansion for 2026.

To become a member, potential campers need to fill out an application form by answering a few questions and agreeing to its rules and regulations online.

The membership, according to their site, helps maintain Blue Moon’s private campground status and “preserve the unique environment we’re building.”

Its prime location — a short drive from cities like Atlanta, Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Nashville, and six hours outside of Charlotte and Asheville — makes it the perfect weekend escape, whether you’re looking to pitch your own tent or soak up some luxury under the stars.

During a time when unplugging feels more like a necessity than a luxury, and connection with other queer folks is essential, this woodsy haven is allowing gays to both “touch grass” and find community in each other.

“Blue Moon Campground is a space where everyone can be themselves,” Kibble explained. “It’s about freedom, friends, and fun — all set within an extraordinary natural landscape.”
