The 23rd annual Taiwan LGBT+ Pride took place on the streets of Taipei on Saturday. It’s the biggest Pride celebration in East Asia and attracts around 150,000 participants.

Taiwan legalized same-sex marriage back in 2019. The annual Pride festival pulls in both locals and those from further afield. This year’s theme was ‘Beyond Links: More Than Clicks’.

The action kicked off with a market and stage performances in Taipei City Hall Square (aka Citizen Square), followed by the traditional parade.

The parade embarked on a circular route before ending up back at its starting point for more stage performances.

Unfortunately, the afternoon was marked by blustery rain. However, this did little to dampen the spirits of those who wanted to celebrate the most visibly queer day in the Taipei calendar.

Gordon Fan (above), a New Yorker living in Taipei, told GayCities: “This year’s 23rd Taipei Pride was an inspiring reminder of how far the city has come. Even in the rain, the energy and support from the crowd were incredible. Having experienced Pride in New York City, I can truly say that Taipei’s Pride is on par in both spirit and scale. I’m so proud to be Taiwanese and out, living in such an open and inclusive city in Asia. Thank you to ‘Out in Taiwan’ for the opportunity to march with everyone!”

Steven Bracco (above), a firefighter visiting from San Francisco, echoed those sentiments.

“It’s our first time in Taipei and Taiwan,” he told GayCities. “I really loved the parade and how people from the sidewalk join in with each float. Great energy and so much pride.”

Another man, Cas Koh (above), said, “Moments like these remind us that when we show up authentically — as colleagues, as allies, as humans — we make space for everyone to belong.”

Taiwan President sends message of support

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, who previously marched in the Pride parade when running for the Presidency in 2023, posted a message of support for Saturday’s event to his Facebook page.

“The government will continue working to ensure that everyone is cherished for their uniqueness, free to live and shine on this land, and to make Taiwan an even more inclusive and understanding nation,” he said.

He acknowledged that prejudice remains and urged people to support friends, classmates, coworkers, and family members both online and offline, as every identity and way of life deserves respect and kindness.
