Track’s ‘new lover boy’ has thrived since coming out as gay

Trey Cunningham came out publicly a year ago. After a couple stumbles, he has become his true self... and faster than ever. The post Track’s ‘new lover boy’ has thrived since coming out as gay appeared first on Outsports.

Trey Cunningham has been on fire. The gay professional hurdler has had an incredible year on the track, and he’s also sharing his true self like never before.

After winning a silver medal at the 2022 World Championships, Cunningham had been in a slump. That slump culminated with a huge disappointment at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials. He’d already chosen to come out publicly before those Olympic Trials, his agent contacting Outsports to share his story (he ultimately went with the New York Times).

“It was for me, just to be one hundred percent authentic, transparent, and not holding back any part of me,” he recently told Cero magazine about his decision to come out publicly as gay. “My coach was really big on this, like, ‘You have to be totally confident in yourself and whatever that means to you on that track.’”

Boom.

Trey Cunningham found success after coming out as gay

Immediately after coming out as gay, Cunningham has had the best year of his career. At the Grand Slam Track meet in Miami he won both events in the short hurdles competition — 110-meter hurdles and 100-meter sprint. He set personal bests in both events.

He had previously set the season’s best time in the 110 hurdles. And just a couple weeks ago, he absolutely crushed it in the Diamond League.

In addition to the huge success he’s created on the track, Cunningham has also not been afraid to let go of the masculine veneer of men’s pro sports and share another side of himself, most recently with a photo shoot for Cero magazine.

“There’s something incredibly powerful in being so authentic,” he told Cero. “A lot of people have told me that they appreciate me being around because I’m authentic. I’m always going to be truthful, I’m honest. I’m shooting it like it is and I’m being me.”

It’s amazing to watch Cunningham’s success since coming out. As Outsports has written for decades, the absurd notion that coming out as gay will hurt a male athlete needs to be buried forever.

Cunningham’s huge success as an out gay athlete — rising to a level he’d never been — is an incredible testament to coming out and being out in pro sports.

Where will the free, healthy Trey Cunningham take his career next? We look forward to watching his continued success, hopefully all the way to being out and proud at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
