Trans track champion CeCe Telfer deluged with hate during USA Olympic Trials

CeCe Telfer had hoped to compete for a spot on the Team USA track and field team.

The transgender athlete policy of World Athletics squashed that.

Telfer was the NCAA Division II national champion in the women’s 400-meter hurdles, competing for Franklin Pierce University. Since then, she and every trans woman have been banned from the female category in international female sports competitions.

As the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials are taking place this year, Telfer has been the victim of some really horrific messages.

“This is not OK and we need to do better as humans,” Telfer wrote on Instagram. “Image trans kids going through this. Kids who are not fully developed or have the mental capacity to handle hate like this.”

To be clear, Telfer is not competing at these Olympic Trials. She had qualified for the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials but was pulled out of the Trials by U.S. Track and Field.

Telfer recently released a book chronicling her experiences, “Make It Count: My Fight to Become the First Transgender Olympic Runner.”

The book, as well as Telfer’s insertion into women’s sports, comes at a time when the sports world debates the inclusion of trans women in the female sports category.
