Sydney WorldPride has officially come to an end and handed the honour of hosting over to Washington DC’s Capital Pride Alliance ahead of the 2025 celebrations.
The handover took place during the closing ceremony on 5 March with a video clip of Washington DC’s Mayor, Muriel Bowser, and Capital Pride Alliance’s Board President, Ashley Smith, inviting the world to the city.
“WorldPride embodies the best parts of humanity, community, the will to learn, and the ability to celebrate our achievements freely and safely as a global family,” the latter said.
The city was first announced as the host in November 2022 by InterPride, an international association of over 400 Pride organisations from more than 70 countries.

The event will coincide with the 50th anniversary of Pride in Washington DC.
“We are excited for the opportunity to share the best of the Washington, DC region with visitors from around the globe, particularly during the 50th Anniversary of Pride in DC,” explained Ryan Bos, Executive Director of the Capital Pride Alliance. “WorldPride provides an expansive platform to further the fight for civil and human rights, and to help secure freedoms for members of the LGBTQ+ community.”
The upcoming festivities are set to include festivals, parades and concerts, as well as a Human Rights Conference.
WorldPride 2025 will take place from 23 May to 8 June.
Further details are expected to be announced in due course.
