Where Neil Patrick Harris plays in Miami and more fantastic finds
Explore the best of Miami with our curated guide to the best hotels, restaurants, and activities in this iconic destination.
For many gay men of a certain generation, their first exposure to Miami was watching the iconic opening credits of The Golden Girls. Set to the dulcet lyrics of “Thank You for Being a Friend,” the camera pans across the vibrant city’s skyline that served as a backdrop for the adventures of television’s most revered queer-coded quartet.
Forty years later, Miami still serves as one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly travel destinations in the world, offering Art Deco accommodations, Michelin-star cuisine, and pulsating nightlife venues where you never know what celebrities you might run into. For queer travelers looking to take their Miami getaway to the next level, GayCities snatched together our favorite hotels, restaurants, and activities that will make you thank Miami for being a friend.

Elser Hotel
Overlooking Biscayne Bay, The Elser was initially constructed as a condo complex before being converted into a luxury hotel. Because of its domestic origins, The Elser’s rooms and suites retain homey features such as full kitchens and living rooms separate from the sleeping quarters, creating an ideal live/work setup for professionals on the road or those looking for more expansive accommodations.
Complimentary coffee and continental breakfast are offered every morning (go for the ham and cheese quiche for those who prefer early-day protein over simple carbs.) Other amenities include a full-sized pool perfect for swimming laps or guest-gazing, a large Jacuzzi for unwinding before bed, and a multi-floor athletic center that’s so top-tier Miami Heat players use it to work out with their personal trainers. Located in the heart of Downtown Miami, the Elser is within walking distance of the Miami sports arena, convention center, and several art museums, making it an ideal hub for both sports fans and aesthete.
The Gabriel
Overlooking downtown Miami’s Biscayne Blvd., this abstract art-adorned glass tower offers amenities such as a rooftop pool, tech-friendly guestrooms, and signature libations from its in-house Bella’s Bar. Situated in the epicenter of the Miami Arts District, The Gabriel is within stumbling distance of cultural centers like American Airlines Arena, Adrienne Arsht Center, Frost Museum of Science, and the Pérez Art Museum. The location is also an ideal extension for travelers embarking on an LGBTQ+ cruise out of PortMiami.
Phuc Yeah
Billed as ‘Modern Vietnamese,’ this queer-owned eatery overtly caters to an LGBTQ+ demographic with signature cocktails like the “Say Gay.” Phuc Yea’s Asian-fusion menu features items like Broccoli Bao, and as one would anticipate from a coastal city, plenty of seafood entrees incorporating takiyaki and scallops. And in a form-follows-function approach to decor, the aesthetic for this Vietnam-meets-Miami restaurant is a synergy of traditional Asian elements, mid-century modern, and street art. The bustling venue provides the ideal backdrop for a queer group dinner gathering or a memorable date.
R House Wynwood
Perfect for both English and Spanish-speaking guests, R House Wynwood’s pan-Latin American menu features a selection of arepas, empanadas, totostones, and Spanish cheese charcuterie. But the highlight of the experience is its nightly live drag shows, often featuring the iconic Athena Dion, drag mother to RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Morphine Love Dion. For those seeking dynamic daytime fun, this Best of Gaycities 2023 nominee hosts one of Miami’s liveliest, mimosa-fueled drag brunches.
Pastis
Nested in the Wynwood Arts District, this Parisian-style brasserie offers a vast selection of pastries and coffee. Entree recommendations include French staples such as Croque Madam, Duck Confit, and Duck a l’Orange. Pastis makes an ideal post-art nosh for those visiting the nearby Wynwood Walls.
Nathan’s Beach Club
Touted as “Miami’s Premiere LGBTQ Venue,” this South Beach watering hole has been a magnet for gay celebrities such as Neil Patrick Harris, who recently received a shout-out from local RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Malaysia Babydoll Foxx during one of her weekly Sunday Funday live shows. So if you are looking to rub elbows with queer notables on the dance floor, Nathan’s Beach Club delivers.
Wynwood Buggies Tours
Led by the artists behind the iconic murals of the Wynwood Arts District, Wynwood Buggies tours offer an immersive exploration of the neighborhood’s vibrant history and culture. Tours, guided along the streets aboard electric buggies, may also include hands-on experiences like a graffiti class to have your hand at what has made the Wynwood Walls, the private outdoor museum conceived by Tony Goldman and curated by Jeffrey Deitch, a worldwide attraction.
This museum features a litany of murals from Miami-based artists. Tours are offered in English and Spanish, and premium tours are available for those looking for a private experience or the chance to discover the neighborhood’s culinary scene.
Kayaking at Oliva River State Park
Guided kayak tours in Oleta River State Pak’s mangrove trails offer several different experiences. Options include the nature-oriented Eco-Tour, twilight Sunset, and monthly Full Moon Kayak tours. Additionally, guests can opt for introductory paddle board lessons or take it to the next level with Paddle Board Yoga. Tours are offered in English and Spanish, and private options, such as corporate/family events and weddings, are also available.
