Advocates Launch Petition Supporting TV Land After Anti-LGBTQ Group Targets Michelle Visage PrEP Ad

HIV prevention advocacy group PrEP4All launched a public letter and petition backing Paramount and TV Land after conservative pressure group One Million Moms demanded the removal of an educational advertisement about Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis.

The targeted campaign, titled PrEP Wisdom, features Emmy-winning producer and reality television host Michelle Visage. Produced alongside ViiV Healthcare, the 30-second broadcast encourages viewers to talk to their doctors about HIV prevention methods. The spot contains no sexual content, names no specific pharmaceutical products, and promotes no specific lifestyle, focusing instead on basic health literacy.

One Million Moms, an initiative of the American Family Association, called on TV Land to pull the broadcast. In response, PrEP4All organized a public drive thanking network executives for keeping the campaign on the air while rallying broad support for public health broadcasting.

The Awareness Gap In Public Health

More than 1.5 million Americans who could benefit from PrEP are currently not using the medication. Advocates point to a persistent lack of basic information as a primary driver of that gap. Because patients cannot request treatments they have never heard of, broad-reach television advertising remains a critical tool for public health organizations.

Opposition to health literacy campaigns undermines progress toward ending the domestic HIV epidemic. By keeping PrEP Wisdom in its rotation, TV Land provides a direct channel for verified medical facts to reach audiences across various demographics.

“No one should be afraid of learning about medicine that prevents HIV,” said Michael Chancley, PrEP user and Communications and Mobilization Manager for PrEP4All. “The real danger isn’t a 30-second commercial; it’s stigma, misinformation, and making people afraid to talk to their healthcare provider. PrEP education saves lives.”

Advocates Call For Expanded Information Access

The debate over the commercial highlights broader challenges facing public health initiatives across the country. Federal and regional HIV prevention efforts regularly encounter political resistance, making corporate and broadcast support vital to maintaining public awareness.

Broadcasters hold significant power in determining whether medically accurate content reaches the public. PrEP4All leadership stressed that maintaining these educational spots directly combats systemic stigma that prevents people from seeking preventive care.

“At a moment when HIV prevention is facing unprecedented attacks, the answer isn’t less awareness-building; it’s more,” said Jeremiah Johnson, Executive Director of PrEP4All. “Every person deserves the opportunity to learn about PrEP and make informed decisions about their health. We should be expanding access to accurate information, not restricting it.”

Community Support And Next Steps

The petition urges network executives to resist outside censorship and continue airing evidence-based health messaging. Signatures gathered through the campaign send a direct signal to media networks and advertising directors that viewers support medically sound public service announcements.

Members of the LGBTQ+ community and HIV advocacy groups continue to emphasize that access to prevention information benefits every population, regardless of background or geographic location.

“HIV has touched millions of families,” said Sean Leviashvili, a member of PrEP4All’s PrEP Users’ Union. “If we’re serious about protecting future generations, we should celebrate every opportunity to educate people about HIV prevention, not silence it. PrEP is one of the greatest public health advances of our lifetime, and everyone deserves the chance to learn about it.”
