After a long, contentious debate, the city of Redlands announced that it will not fly a rainbow flag during Pride Month in June. The 3-2 vote drew a number of attendees and sparked intense conversation between City Council members who argued over the flag’s symbolism.
The members who voted against the measure included Mayor Eddie Tejeda, Councilmember Mario Saucedo and Mayor Pro Tem Paul Barich.
During the intense public meeting, Councilmember Denise Davis described raising the flag as a “statement of our shared humanity,” but Saucedo — who opposed the measure — lamented that his friends now have “an issue” with him over his stance and that he’s been “called names on social media.”

Redlands, population 73,000, is roughly halfway between Los Angeles and Palm Springs. In March 2024, residents of Huntington Beach, California voted to ban Pride flags from government buildings.
Last month the city council of Downey, California, which has an openly gay mayor, voted to ban Pride flags from city buildings after a push from the anti-LGBTQ hate group Mass Resistance.
But earlier this week Pride flags defiantly went up in Downey on eight properties run by Los Angeles County. See that report in the final video below.
