Culture Catch-Up
SOPHOMORE YEAR: We’ve never been so excited to get back to school now that Amazon Prime Video has announced Benito Skinner‘s campus coming-out comedy Overcompensating will return for Season 2. We need a new love interest for Benny, more Hailee Marie Matthews & more “Super Bass,” stat! [Deadline]
I DON’T KNOW HER: In a new No Filter podcast interview, Rosie O’Donnell opens up about her heartbreaking falling out with fellow lesbian comic Ellen Degeneres back in the day, reflecting on what she calls “one of the most painful things to ever happen to me in show business.” [Queerty]
WHIP IT!: One of our most anticipated movies of the fall is Pillion, the twisted gay romance where Alexander Skarsgård plays a leather-loving dom biker who finds a new sub in The Old Guard‘s Harry Melling—yes, really! There’s a new look at the movie, which is really just two images, but we’ll take what we can get with this one!
TOUCHDOWN!: Especially in light of right-wing outrage over the NFL’s male cheerleaders, the gay internet has gone wild for a viral photo of college football players celebrating a big win by holding each other in what can only be described as a loving, passionate embrace. We’ll have what they’re having! [Outsports]
LINK-UP OF THE CENTURY: Fashion It Girl Alex Consani and headline-making activist Vivian Wilson are maximizing their joint slay in a new interview about becoming role models for trans & queer youth and using their platform for good: “I think being uncensored is an inherent part of being trans,” Consani shares. [Dazed]
PRINCE OF POP: Conan Gray certainly hit a high note at this past weekend’s VMAs, letting everyone in on a secret the gays have known for a long time: This guy’s got talent! And if you weren’t already paying attention, maybe these shots of the “Vodka Cranberry” singer casually undressing backstage will do the trick?
SCREEN STEAM: Cosmopolitan magazine published the “definitive list” of the best sex scenes ever, and it’s surprisingly pretty gay, from Red, White & Royal Blue‘s infamous “moment of insertion” to that unforgettable three-way in Y Tu Mamá También, and even the #1 spot is super hot and super queer! [Cosmopolitan]
WAKE UP, GAYS!: Our favorite Southern-fried sleuth is back as Benoit Blanc delves into another whodunit with this fall’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, already being called the series’ darkest & best film yet—but is it the gayest? Here’s why fans have their eye on Josh O’Connor’s hot priest character. [Queerty]
SCHOOL’D: Renée Rapp is the latest guest on viral Recess Therapy star Julian Shapiro-Barnum’s web series Celebrity Substitute, where she sets out to teach an elementary school classroom how to record their own version of her hit song “Leave Me Alone.” It’s as delightfully chaotic as you’d hope!
REJOICIFY!: Get a closer look at Wicked: For Good in Entertainment Weekly‘s storied Fall Movies Preview issue, featuring intriguing new details about its two highly anticipated original songs—one for Cynthia Erivo, one for Ariana Grande—in which Elphaba & Glinda ponder the true meaning of home. [Entertainment Weekly]
IN TRANS WE TRUST: In the grand tradition of the MTV VMAs, noted ally Sabrina Carpenter staged a mini queer takeover during her “Tears” performance at this past weekend’s show, grooving alongside Drag Race & Legendary alum and featuring backup dancers carrying signs in support of trans rights. [LGBTQNation]
STANDOFF: Making its world premiere this Saturday 9/13 at LA’s CinePride film fest is the thrilling drama Bleed Like Me, about two gay “frenemies” and would-be filmmakers whose desperate attempt for funding goes south, leaving them to hide out together in a desert home where tensions continue to rise. [CinePride]
The Final Hump
What happens in the dark room doesn’t always stay in the dark room thanks to drag royalty Willam’s funny, flirty, and filthy new reality competition series Willam’s Dark Room Duel, coming exclusively to OUTtv on September 16. A group of male strippers will show off their many, many talents via a series of creative performance challenges in a bracket-style tournament, with only one coming out on top, winning a prize package that includes a spot opening for Willam’s live show.
“I used to book and manage strippers back in the day, and still some of my best friends are strippers,” she shares in a press statement. “Trust me, when it comes to taking off clothes I know what I’m talking about.” She’ll be joined by a panel of judges that includes drag queen Meatball, legendary male entertainer Rhyheim Shabazz, strip expert Yony, and Slag Wars Season 2-winning burlesque star Mama Mamba. There’s a brand-new trailer below, so grease that pole and get ready for some fun!
