Twice, you say?
As happens with some same-sex couples, both partners had plans to propose marriage to the other, ultimately doing so in two different countries.
“We had planned to both ask on this trip to Mexico,” Darrow told Outsports via text message, “but then he ended up planning a dinner at our favorite spot in the neighborhood and inviting about 30 friends over, including a surprise appearance from my brother!”
Darrow stuck to the original plan, proposing to Nussbaum at the Giraldi House during their trip to Mexico City.
“It’s been the best few days,” Darrow told Outsports. “We’re so excited!!”
Also joining in the festivities to celebrate the guys’ “first” engagement in New York was Jallen Messersmith, the former college basketball player who came out as gay while at Benedictine College.
Mason Darrow was the first out gay DI football player
Mason Darrow was a senior offensive lineman for the Princeton Tigers when he came out publicly as gay in a story and video for Outsports. Taking the leap 10 years ago this autumn, he was the first gay Division I college football player to come out publicly.
One of the most powerful pieces of Darrow’s story was, in 2015, the undying love and support shown to him by his head coach and teammates.
Darrow now works for the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee as a manager of philanthropic giving.
His fiancé, Jacob Nussbaum, is an executive at American Express working on airline and travel partnerships.
Outsports wishes the two young men a life of happiness together, whether they’re in New York, dancing in the Fire Island Pines or headed to the next Olympics.
