Culture Catch-Up

HOT FOR TEACHER: Matt Bomer is reuniting with Fellow Travelers director Daniel Minahan & EP Robbie Rogers for Hulu’s drama pilot Foster Dade, adapted from an acclaimed novel about a boarding school mystery involving an expelled student and a handsome, magnetic teacher (played by Bomer, naturally). [Deadline]

HIII-YAAA!: Are we dreaming? While guesting on Las Culturistas this week, Jennifer Lawrence spilled that she and Emma Stone are producing—and possibly co-starring in—a new movie for beloved Muppet diva Miss Piggy, which is being written by Tony-winning Oh, Mary! creator & star Cole Escola! [BroadwayWorld]

CATCH A VIBE: The directorial debut from Tommy Dorfman, I Wish You All The Best (in theaters Nov. 7) is a beautiful coming-of-age tale for nonbinary teen Ben (Corey Fogelmanis), but there’s also time for romance, as seen in this Queerty exclusive clip where they vibe with cute classmate Nathan (Miles Gutierrez-Riley).

KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL: Top Chef fans, foodies & appreciators of hot people are flipping out over the reveal that Padma Lakshmi—former host of the reality competition show—appears to be dating previous chef-testant Melissa King, hard-launching with a classic Halloween couples costume: Gomez & Morticia Addams. [Queerty]

OUT ON THE AIRWAVES: Fifty years ago, popular ABC cop sitcom Barney Miller aired a history-making episode featuring one of the first openly gay couples in mainstream TV. Looking back, 94-year-old star Ray Stewart comes out & jokes about being “the Wright Brothers” of LGBTQ+ representation. [New York Times]

DID YOU JUSTS AY WIG?: In her first post-Wicked role, Cynthia Erivo will play a brilliant young attorney in moral crisis in Prima Facie, a drama adapted from the one-woman play that won Jodie Comer a Tony Award & an Olivier. This first look show her rocking the traditional powdered grey wig of the U.K. courts. [Variety]

WHAT A TEASE: Drag icon BenDeLaCreme is busting out the brassieres to serve as the host for burlesque legend Dita Von Teese‘s upcoming new show Nocturnelle, which will blend “old-Hollywood allure with theatrical magic” as the pair performs to sold-out crowds across the U.K. and Europe next year. [Parade]

ON THE RUN: George Santos is loose after Tr*mp commuted his sentence and he’s… running in the NYC Marathon? On the most recent SNL, Bowen Yang popped by the Weekend Update desk to hilariously portray the con man as a compulsive liar, which it turns out is pretty close to the truth! [LGBTQNation]

WHAT’S YOUR FANTASY?: Here’s your first full look at 100 Nights Of Hero, an enchanting queer fairytale about a young bride (Maika Monroe) caught between the advances of her husband’s boorish friend (Nicholas Galitzine) & her maid (Emma Corrin), with whom she shares an intimate bond. Oh, also Charli XCX is there!

THE KICKER: A scripted web series called Armour is set to explore what happens when a professional soccer player (played by & Juliet‘s Jordan Luke Gage) comes out as gay. The 10-episode narrative will be available to watch for free on YouTube, and features real-life out athlete Josh Cavallo as a consultant. [Outsports]

COMEDY QUEEN: Known for her role in Benito Skinner’s Overcompensating & as his Ride podcast co-host, queer comic Mary Beth Barone is set to film an hour-long concert special, Galaxy Brain, in March for Netflix. The news marks a huge win for Baronies everywhere. (That’s what you call her stans, right?) [Deadline]

ATLANTA’S FINEST: Someone at World Of Wonder had the brilliant idea to put a camera in front of Drag Race‘s Nicole Paige Brooks—excuse us, that’s “NPG F.A.G.”—and let her gab about what ever she wants, looking back on her life & career via her camera roll in the new series Scroll Patrol premiering Nov. 12.

The Final Hump

When Mika broke through in 2007 with “Grace Kelly”—a song about identity & individuality with a distinctly queer sensibility—he was ahead of the curve of our current wave of out LGBTQ+ pop stars. And though he initially refused labels, the singer-songwriter withstood homophobic pushback all the same, later confirming he was part of the community and eventually making more overtly, unapologetically queer music. Nearly two decades later, the rest of the world is finally catching up with Mika, who seems poised for his next big moment with the new song “Modern Times,” which teases a bold new era and album coming soon. The single is a soaring electro-pop anthem that’ll have you bouncing around the room, and it comes complete with a stylish, eye-popping video.
