DeWanna Bonner is now No. 5 on the all-time WNBA scoring list. She made the jump up one spot earlier this week when she scored 20 points over Indiana, lifting her Connecticut Sun team to the in Caitlin Clark’s debut WNBA game.
It wasn’t lost on a lot of people whom she passed in her meteoric rise up that list, and who noticed.
Before this week, the fifth-ranked career scoring leader in the WNBA had been her former Phoenix Mercury teammate, Candice Dupree. Bonner and Dupree had been married for several years. Bonner even had children while the two were together.
The two split up at some point.

Now, Bonner is engaged to marry her Sun teammate, Alyssa Thomas.
Likely to celebrate her fiancee, and not looking to throw shade, Thomas was effusive about Bonner’s accomplishment.
“I think she’s underrated,” Thomas said after Bonner’s big night. “Top 5 all-time, I mean c’mon. That’s unheard of. At her age, she’ incredible. We go off of her and she makes it look easy out there.”
Lindsay Gibbs was all over the dynamic.

Bonner is 36. She was the fifth overall pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft out of Auburn. She’s been with the Connecticut Sun since 2020. She’s a five-time WNBA All-Star, including two of the last three seasons with the Sun.
Bonner and Auburn celebrated the accomplishment.
Bonner is now only a couple hundred points behind No. 4 Tina Charles, and almost 500 points behind No. 3, Tamika Catchings. She is in the upper echelon of great WNBA scorers, no doubt.
Though there’s virtually no way she’ll reach the top of the list, Diana Taurasi, who is over 3,000 points ahead of Bonner. She would have to average 20 points per game over the next four seasons, even as Taurasi continues to add to her total, to have a shot.
Regardless, the “love triangle” involving these two great WNBA scorers, as well as a fiancee, is pure WNBA.
