The Washington Post reports:
A plan to bar people from celebrating Pride in the park at Dupont Circle this weekend has been canceled following pushback from local elected officials, according to two D.C. council members. The change comes less than 24 hours after the closing was announced by the National Park Service Monday evening.
The park is at the center of Washington’s historic LGBTQ+ neighborhood, and an announcement by the Park Police that it would be closed during this weekend’s WorldPride parade and parties was another blow to a celebration that has gotten off to a rocky start. The Park Service, which has authority over Dupont Circle, did not respond to requests for comment Tuesday.
Councilmember Zachary Parker (D-Ward 5) said he had several conversations with D.C. Police Chief Pamela A. Smith Tuesday morning conveying concerns from the LGBTQ community and asking her to reconsider. The chief’s decision to rescind the closure, Parker said, shows that “people’s voice matters in this moment, and that’s a great message for this WorldPride.”

I spoke with Chief Smith this morning and I’m glad to report that the decision to close DuPont Circle Park is being rescinded. The Park is central to the lgbtq community, and neighbors will be able to enjoy it this year for World Pride.
