San Diego Pride 2026 served up a candy land of queer community and kink inclusion

San Diego unabashedly embraces its laid-back persona. But this past week, the SoCal city proved that “laid back” is not the same as “vanilla.” San Diego Pride 2026 showcased a queer community that balances chill vibes with kink inclusivity.

Pride week kicked off Wednesday evening at Urban Mo’s in the gayborhood of Hillcrest with Swap Meat.

“M-E-A-T,” clarified Salvadore Leon, aka Mr San Diego Leather, as he manned one of the booths at this fetish-themed flea market. “Swap Meat is a gathering of leather folk where you can swap, get to know one another, and meet some new friends.”

For Sal, San Diego Pride is an important opportunity to unite the city’s LGBTQ community during a year mired in homo/transphobic adversity.

“With all the chaos going on in the world right now, I think it’s the best time to gather together and remember how good it feels to come together in person as a community and just get to know each other, get to befriend each other, and be one together.”

The Pride festivities continued through the week across Hillcrest’s various nightlife venues, such as the Gear party at The Brass Rail, where Sal worked coat check. This BDSM bacchanal served as a cross-section of San Diego’s kink community. Packs of pup players frolicked on the dance floor while professional doms took the stage to give live shibari and flogging demonstrations.

On Saturday morning, the myriad queer revelers of San Diego pulled it together for the city’s annual Pride parade, running down 6th Street along Balboa Park. This year, the candy-themed float from Hillcrest hotspot Rich’s took the cake, giving a new meaning to “sugar baby.”

Afterwards, the crowd migrated to Balboa Park for the official San Diego Pride festival, which further showcased kink-inclusivity. Some harness-clad attendees browsed rainbow-mosaic crowns at the A. Russell Design booth, while others sniffed scented candles from the Palm Spring Candle Company with homocentric names like “Drag Brunch” and “Hang Over Cure.”

At the heart of the festival, the disparate members of San Diego’s queer kinkster communities converged at Leather Realm, a private 18+ space showcasing various individuals and organizations specializing in kinks, fetishes, sexualities, and gender identities.

At the center of Leather Realm, a petite trans person going by the mononym Honey teaches a workshop in an open-air tent, while at the far end of this kinky cul-de-sac, volunteers are introducing consenting novices to various spanking techniques. The perimeter is populated by booths featuring local organizations such as Leather Boys San Diego and Club X.

“There’s also a lot of people that find their way into the queer community through the kink community,” explained LuLu Lovemore, president of Club X, a pansexual organization dedicated to education and inclusivity. Beside her is a display case featuring customized Barbie dolls she curated into unapologetic sexual positions. “I think this is something that is really lacking in the larger community, which is third spaces. Club X’s [motto] is: ‘Come for the kink, stay for the community… and kink.”
