TN Bill Would Legalize Anti-LGBTQ Discrimination

Two new controversial bills filed in Tennessee could roll back certain protections and rights for LGBTQ people, but the sponsor said they’re simply about providing clarity. The bills, sponsored by Rep. Gino Bulso (R-Brentwood) and Sen. Janice Bowling (R-Tullahoma), focus on the Supreme Court decisions that granted same-sex couples the right to marry and expanded workplace protections to LGBTQ people.

The Banning Bostock Act would codify that laws prohibiting sex discrimination would not prohibit discrimination against a person for being homosexual or transgender, nor would it prohibit discrimination because of sexual orientation, sexual behavior, gender identity, or gender non-conforming behavior.

Meanwhile, the next bill would allow private citizens and organizations to refuse to recognize same-sex marriage, and protect attorneys from being punished for refusing to celebrate or perform a same sex marriage.
