Bored of the apps? Kansas City offers a unique way for queer people to connect
How would you pitch a good friend to other LGBTQ+ people seeking connection?

The promoters of an event in Kansas City are gaining a following by offering a novel and fun way for queer lonely hearts to connect.
Lo Mchel and Tiffany Watts, the duo behind ‘Where To Find Us’, organize bi-monthly gatherings in which friends can pitch their single buddies to others, complete with PowerPoint presentations. Think of it as a dating equivalent of Shark Tank.

Participants are given 3-5 minutes to highlight their friend’s best features and “green flags”. There can be anything between 120-400 people in the audience. The atmosphere is akin to a game show mixed with amusing wedding reception-style speeches, with some stories proving unexpectedly moving.

The evening is broken up with performances and games, while vendors are also invited to set up stalls. It makes for a very different, community-based evening where you can kick back and enjoy yourself for a few hours.
There’s also, of course, the chance of meeting someone. Attendees wear color-coded wristbands to indicate whether they’re single, partnered, or looking to connect. You’re also welcome to bring a wingman, while the organizers are happy to make introductions if you’re feeling shy.
Beginnings

Even if you don’t meet ‘the one’, there’s a chance of making new friends and expanding your queer network.
Where To Find Us launched in 2024. Mchel and Watts said they saw a similar idea online and decided to experiment creating something in Kansas City.
“Your friend gets on stage, and they’re saying all these beautiful things about you, and they’re really hyping you up,” Watts told the Kansas City Star recently. “It’s a really beautiful feeling. A lot of times it’s exactly what you need, especially when you’ve been single and looking for a while.”

The next Where To Find Us will be a pool party on July 25 at Grinders, 1826 Locust Street. The duo is also set to soon expand beyond Kansas City, with forthcoming dates in St. Louis and Chicago.
Those wishing to pitch a friend need to send the team a short, 90-minute video preview of their pitch, so they can check you’re committed to taking part and understand the mission. Follow Where To Find Us on Instagram for more details.
